I'm sure most of you have heard of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program - where an adult is matched with a child who needs a mentor in his or her life. I was a "Big" many years ago, and it allowed me the chance to befriend an amazing little guy with the world's biggest heart. I can attest to the fact that the "Big" gets just as much out of the mentorship as the "Little."
I was surprised to learn that San Diego County has a special Big Brothers Big Sisters program just for military children. It's called Operation Bigs, and it's aimed at military children who have parents deployed overseas. As Jannette Kutchins of Operation Bigs tells me:
In San Diego, there are four Operation Bigs sites: MCAS Miramar, Coronado, Point Loma, and Serra Mesa. The North County/Camp Pendleton Operation Bigs program also has volunteer opportunities at five different elementary schools.
