Capt. Francis Gary Powers will posthumously receive the Silver Star during a Pentagon ceremony on Friday, June 15. Powers spent almost two years in a Moscow prison after his U-2 reconnaissance plane crashed in the Soviet Union in 1960.
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz will award the Silver Star to Powers' children, according to the Department of Defense, because of their father's:
...“exceptional loyalty” while enduring harsh interrogation in the Lubyanka Prison in Moscow for almost two years.
Powers' children, Gary Powers Jr. and Dee Powers, will attend the Pentagon ceremony in their father's honor. Powers was killed in a helicopter crash in 1977, according to Wikipedia.
