An Army specialist deployed in Afghanistan has started taking male hormones to begin her transition from female to male. The transgender female, who asked to be called "Keith," is hiding her identity but telling her story to give inspiration to others in the military.
Keith, 26, spoke to The Military Times about her journey via Skype from where she's stationed in Afghanistan. Keith is taking male hormones prescribed by a civilian doctor, the first step in the physical change she hopes to make one day from female to male.
“Right now, I’m trying to figure out how fast I want to transition and where I see myself in the next six years. I do plan on having the surgeries. Just a matter of when. It’s hard to do while in [the Army].”
Keith is a lesbian who is legally married to another woman.
