Chuck Hagel is now the third Secretary of Defense to consider whether fallen San Diego Marine Sgt. Rafael Peralta deserves the Medal of Honor. Rep. Duncan Hunter sent Hagel a letter in October asking him to reconsider the evidence of Peralta's bravery, and a Hunter spokesman says the secretary is "looking at it seriously."

More than 1,100 Marines from Camp Pendleton will head to Australia in Spring 2014. Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 5th Marines will be the first battalion from California to participate in Marine Rotational Force-Darwin. The first two rotations involved Marines stationed in Hawaii.

When President Barack Obama named Christine H. Fox to be Acting Deputy Defense Secretary this week, she became the highest-ranking female in the Department of Defense's history. The Third Marine Aircraft Wing Band, based at MCAS Miramar in San Diego, covered two Macklemore & Ryan Lewis songs at their recent Marine Corps Ball. Video of their performance of "Thrift Shop" and Can't Hold Us" is going viral on YouTube, with more than 184,000 views so far.

New information has emerged from North Korea about Merrill E. Newman, the 85-year-old Korean War veteran from Northern California, who has been detained in North Korea since Oct. 26. It seems North Korea considers Newman a prisoner of war - the Korean War - which took place sixty years ago.
