The possible merger of US Airways and Delta Airlines has many industry analysts wondering whether the deal will work. But what's in it for fliers? NPR's Scott Simon talks with Scott McCartney, who writes "The Middle Seat" column for The Wall Street Journal, about how the merger will benefit consumers.
McCartney says that while newly merged companies sometimes yield benefits to customers, consolidation in the airline industry often allows new upstarts to enter the market, offering lower prices and new approaches. A main reason, he says, is that the larger companies are often distracted by new organizational challenges.
In the case of Delta, the giant company has suffered losses at the hands of JetBlue, AirTran and Southwest.
