Abbas, Olmert Say Difficult Compromises Are Ahead

President Bush opened the Annapolis, Md., conference on Middle East peace with a speech on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy, pledging to devote his remaining time in office to achieving what he called an "ambitious goal."

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he came to Annapolis to "defend in all sincerity and candor, and without wavering, the right of our people to see a new dawn, without occupation," while Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert declared that they both "no longer have the privilege of adhering to dreams which are severed from the sufferings of our peoples."
