The San Diego City Council will vote on a final budget next week. The city is looking to cut expenses to make up for a multi-million dollar budget deficit. But some officials want to add employees in one city department.
San Diego Independent Budget Analyst Andrea Tevlin is not recommending big changes in her final review of the 2010 fiscal year budget. But she does suggest the city spend about 400 thousand dollars to create four more positions in the City Auditor’s office. Tevlin recommends hiring one fraud investigator and three additional auditors. Council member Kevin Faulconer has also called on Mayor Jerry Sanders to add the positions into his 2010 budget. In a memo, Faulconer says the investigations conducted by the Auditor’s office can potentially save the city millions of dollars. He says additional staff members would let the office handle a bigger work load and ensure San Diego avoids the fiscal control problems it had in the past.
