San Diego’s water cops haven’t been writing too many tickets. No one in the city has yet had to pay for wasting water.

The water department has referred about 30 water-wasting cases to the code compliance department which is responsible for handing out citations. But the water department’s Mike Bresnahan says so far no one’s been hit with a fine.

“We’ve not actually issued an administrative citation yet. We have issued what are known as warning citations which does not have a monetary impact,” he says.

Bresnahan says his department tries to work with customers to fix the problem rather than writing a ticket. He says in September the department had 459 investigations open. Investigations peaked in June at 819. Bresnahan says people are also conserving. Water use was down more than 10 percent in September compared to the same time last year.
