It’s not yet clear how budget cuts in San Diego are going to affect people living in the city. The Mayor is meeting with department heads this week to determine where the cuts should be made.

San Diego is facing a projected budget deficit between $180 million to $200 million. Mayor Jerry Sanders says he and his staff are trying to make some cuts by the end of the year. They’re hoping to make the spring budget process a little easier. But Sanders says the public will be affected no matter what.

“We are trying to make the cuts in a way that they’re behind the scenes as much as we possibly can. So that it’s people that are behind city hall doors or people in administrative slots. But there are going to be service cuts, we simply can’t get around that,” he says.

Sanders says revenues from sales and hotel room taxes are down and he doesn’t think they’ve hit bottom yet. Sanders says he’ll make recommendations to the City Council next week about where budget cuts should be made. He says he’s also worried Sacramento might try again to take money from local governments.
