Bilbray, Filner Weigh In On Arizona Immigration Law Debate

Two local congressmen are weighing in on the federal government's attempt to block Arizona's new immigration law. The law is scheduled to take effect this month.

Republican Brian Bilbray says he supports the law and disagrees with the federal government's lawsuit. He says the state's legislation matches federal law, and he is challenging opponents who say that immigration enforcement is not a local issue.

"Local law enforcement's involvement in federal activities is well grounded," said Bilbray.

On the other side of the issue is Democratic Congressman Bob Filner, who agrees that the federal government is not doing the job, but says local enforcement will lead to racial profiling. He says that could negatively affect the community.

"If the community is scared to come in contact with the police, the whole community's public safety suffers," said Filner.

Both congressmen agree the Arizona law will have little impact on California.
