The public will get its first chance tonight to sound off about a proposed new San Diego City Hall. A public hearing on the issue will be held at 6 p.m. in the current City Hall.
The City Council must hold two public hearings before it can vote to put the issue on the November ballot. The estimated price tag for the project is $294 million, but Darren Pudgil in the mayor’s office maintains the project makes good financial sense
"Over the next 10 years, we would be able to save about $24 million," he said. "Over the 50 year life of the new building we’d save about $232 million."
Pudgil says right now that money goes toward maintenance of the current city hall and office rentals for city employees.
Opponents say San Diego shouldn’t take on such an expensive project while dealing with yearly budget deficits and service cuts. The second public hearing is scheduled for next week.
