James Bowersox, former longtime Poway city manager, was sworn in Tuesday as a member of the board of directors of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
The San Diego State University graduate joins Fern Steiner, Lynne L. Heidel and Keith Lewinger in representing the San Diego County Water Authority on Metropolitan's 37-member board.
Bowersox succeeds W.D. "Bud" Pocklington, who had served on the Metropolitan board since August 2004.
Bowersox has represented the city of Poway on the Water Authority's Board of Directors since September 1998. He is vice chair of the Water Authority's Comprehensive Reliability and Cost Assessment Ad Hoc Committee and also a member of the SDCWA board's Administrative and Finance and Engineering and Operations committees.
Bowersox represents the Water Authority on the Water Conservation Garden Joint Powers Authority at Cuyamaca College in Rancho San Diego.
Named Poway's first top administrator in March 1981, three months after the city's incorporation, he served in that position until his retirement in December 2005. Prior to his Poway tenure, Bowersox was assistant city manager in Cerritos. He started his municipal career with the city of La Mesa.
Active in community service, Bowersox is treasurer of the Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center at Pauwai, and president of the Poway Senior Center. He also serves as a director of the Kiwanis Club of Poway and as vice president of the Kiwanis Club of Poway, California Foundation.
The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a cooperative of 26 cities and water agencies serving 19 million people in six counties. The district imports water from the Colorado River and Northern California to supplement local supplies, and helps members develop increased water conservation, recycling, storage and other resource-management programs.
