The San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council is accusing Councilman Carl DeMaio of accepting donations for his mayoral run before he is legally allowed to. The group said DeMaio’s campaign website was launched over the weekend and was accepting donations. Candidates can not take contributions until June 5, a year before next year's election.
Kyle Haverback is with the Labor Council. He made a $5 contribution to DeMaio’s campaign and said he got an e-mail thanking him.
"In addition to the e-mail, after I made a contribution the pop-up where you enter your credit card information changed, thanking me for having made a donation to Councilmember DeMaio’s mayoral campaign," he said.
DeMaio’s campaign issued a statement saying the Labor Council accessed a beta version of the site. It said the contribution hasn’t been processed yet and that no donations were solicited. The campaign called the Labor Council's donation a stunt. DeMaio's campaign website now says it’s under construction.
