Calif. Senate GOP Ready to Block CSU Board Chair's Nomination

The chair of the California State University Board of Trustees is at risk of losing his seat. Herbert Carter's nomination must be approved by a two-thirds supermajority of the State Senate by the end of the month. But Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff said his caucus members aren't willing to support Carter's confirmation:

"There seems to be a culture of high pay and salaries, and at the same time, high tuition fees for students. We share the same concerns that the governor does when he put in writing to them that he was concerned about their compensation package and they need to reform it. We've seen nothing that evidences that they have changed that."

The CSU Chancellor's office said the university would be disappointed if the board chair is not confirmed.

The Senate could vote on Carter's nomination as early as Thursday. It's also possible Governor Jerry Brown could pull the nomination and submit a different name instead.

A big decision awaits some voters this April as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
