SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A leading opponent of California's bullet train has filed a new environmental lawsuit against the state's high-speed rail authority.
Kings County and a group of its residents sued Thursday in Sacramento County Superior Court. They allege the authority "abused its discretion" and violated the state's Environmental Quality Act when it approved a 114-mile segment from Fresno to Bakersfield.
Opponents say the review is "unquestionably inadequate" and fails to address serious effects of the $68-billion project on homes and businesses.
High-speed rail spokeswoman Lisa Marie Alley says the lawsuit "is not about protecting the environment but about Kings County trying every means possible to stop high-speed rail."
The county has sued over various aspects of the project. The agency says it has not been served the latest suit.
