Eastbound lanes of state Route 94 were closed Friday afternoon at 30th Street in San Diego while authorities tried to take a reportedly suicidal man into custody, the California Highway Patrol said.
Traffic backed up into the downtown area about 2 p.m. Westbound lanes were closed briefly, then motorists were allowed to continue on beneath the overpass.
Drivers going south on state Route 15 were not able to transition to westbound lanes of Route 94.
Motorists reported about 1:50 p.m. that a man was walking back and forth across the 30th Street bridge, on the outside of the safety fence. Drivers stopped on the freeway before officers got there.
The right-hand eastbound lane was reopened about 2:30 p.m.
