  • After closing for a transformative construction project, Mingei International Museum will reopen to the public on Sept. 3, 2021, kicking off a month of celebratory activities and programs including the second annual San Diego Design Week, the return of the art-making program Family Sunday, live performances and artist talks. The grand reopening will reveal a new and dynamic Museum with enhancements to its 1915 Spanish Colonial style building in Balboa Park and an additional 10,000 square feet of space for exhibitions and programming, a theater, education center and amenities including a bistro, store and coffee bar.   • Harold is a clockmaker working on a book called “The Aging Magician.” He has a bicycle he rides around his shop. He plays the accordion. His sister calls him a lot. He takes the F train home. He hears the voices of children. Aging Magician is a meditation on the gifts we leave behind for those who come after us, and the hope that they pick up where we left off. It is also a celebration of youth, imagination, and the peculiar magic of ordinary life. In its west coast premiere, Aging Magician is a hauntingly beautiful hybrid of opera and theatre that combines opera, choral music, and puppetry, produced by one of todays most influential and innovative taste makers, Beth Morrison Projects. She was scheduled to sing the title role of Gianni Schicchi last season, the first time the lead role was to be sung by a mezzo-soprano, but that production has now been postponed to the 2022-2023 season.
