Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial will hold its annual Memorial Day Ceremony on May 26, 2025. We join others across the country to honor the fallen Americans who served in our country’s Armed Forces and recognize their service and sacrifices.This year, Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial will pay special tribute to the Marines of the Third Battalion, Fifth Marine Regiment, call sign “Darkhorse.” During the fall and winter of 2010-2011, the Marines of 3/5 fought in the Battle of Sangin, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, sustaining the highest number of casualties of any unit throughout the 10-year war. Our ceremony will commemorate those 25 Marines who selflessly gave their lives so that others may know freedom.Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial is also proud to announce that Major General Jason L. Morris will be the keynote speaker at the Memorial Day Ceremony. Major General Morris, then a Lieutenant Colonel, was the Battalion Commander of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division during the Battle of Sangin. He currently serves as the Director, Operations Division, Headquarters United States Marine Corps.The ceremony will feature broadcast journalist and former NBC correspondent Chip Reid, who was embedded with 3/5 for six weeks during the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003. Mr. Reid has since published “Battle Scars–– Twenty Years Later: 3rd Battalion 5th Marines Looks Back at the Iraq War and How it Changed Their Lives.” Mr. Reid will amplify the relevance and importance of those we are honoring during our Memorial Day Ceremony.Visit: Mt. The Navy’s 38th Annual Bay Bridge Run/Walk is hosted by the Navy Region Southwest Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Program. The unique 4-mile run/walk has a one-of-a-kind spectacular panoramic view as participants make their way to Coronado’s beautiful Tidelands Park from downtown San Diego over the Coronado Bay Bridge. During the finish line celebration, runners receive a Finisher’s medal, event T-shirt, and enjoy sponsor booths. Plus, all participants are eligible for drawing prizes and complimentary transportation back to downtown.This is a sanctioned USAT&F 4-mile course.Our start line is at One Park Blvd. at Harbor Dr. between the Hilton San Diego Bayfront and the San Diego Convention Center. The course travels south along Harbor Dr. to Cesar E. Chavez Pkwy. Participants head east to National Ave., then up and over the Coronado Bay Bridge. The race finishes in Coronado’s Tidelands Park. Expect flat streets, an incline up the bridge and a decline down the bridge. Walkers are encouraged to bring cameras to take some great photos of San Diego and Coronado from on top of the bridge!Baby strollers, wheelchairs and guide dogs are permitted. The North Coast Symphony Orchestra presents "Voices of Spring", a program of operatic favorites, on Saturday, May 17 at 2:30 p.m. at the San Dieguito United Methodist Church, 170 Calle Magdelena, Encinitas. The performance features Katherine Polit (soprano), Sarah-Nicole Ruddy-Carter (mezzo soprano), Aaron Humble (tenor), and Michael Sokol (baritone) and includes selections from operas by Delibes, Saint-Saens, Donizetti, Verdi, Offenbach, and Wagner. The orchestra will also premiere the orchestrated version of “A Long Trip,” a 17-minute opera by its conductor Jordan Kuspa.
