Guitarist Peter Sprague loves jazz. But he also digs deep into musical history and unearths some sonic gems from the Beatles, Jimmy Webb and Brazil’s Antonio Carlos Jobim. For this concert, he connects with vocalist Allison Adams Tucker, pianist Danny Green, drummer Duncan Moore and bassist Mack Leighton for an evening of good sounds, good vibes and good times. The group recently released three albums: “All You Need Is Love” (Beatles songs), “Christmas Time Is Here” (holiday music) and “Peter Sprague Plays Jobim” (Brazilian music). Workshop 10:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Art and science intersect with elin o’Hara slavick’s art that maps radioactive residuum and Dr. David Richardson’s epidemiological studies of radiation’s human impact. O’Hara slavick, who wrote “Bomb After Bomb: A Violent Cartography” and “After Hiroshima,” is an internationally exhibiting artist who captures the lingering effects of radiation with autoradiographs and creates contact prints of rubbings of trees and architecture exposed to atomic bombs in Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Fukushima. Richardson, an epidemiologist who has conducted studies of cancer among U.S. federal nuclear workers and Japanese survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, is the lead writer on the United Nations Committee on Epidemiological Studies of Radiation and Cancer (UNSCEAR). The duo is visiting from UC Irvine, where o’Hara slavick was artist in residence at the College of Health Sciences for the past three years and Richardson is associate dean for research in public health and a professor of environmental and occupational health. In this dynamic presentation, the artist and scientist discuss how they align their practices within the past, present and future of our shared nuclear realities. “Stories From Home” is a series of dances embodying the oral traditions of Nuevomexicano, Chicano and Mexican American communities in the American Southwest. Choreographer Yvonne Montoya and a diverse cast of dancers draw upon personal histories as well as stories of ancestral knowledge. “Stories From Home” is a vessel for personal and specific tales, while also offering a broader look at various cultural traditions throughout the Southwest. The work addresses themes such as the Bracero Program, the creation of the atomic bomb in Northern New Mexico and illness related to U.S. government projects, the loss of language because of 1940s Americanization programs, the experience of the Sephardim people during and after the Spanish Inquisition, family, love and querencia. This Valentine’s weekend, rest in sweet stillness during this restorative "Heart in Harmony" Sound Healing on Sunday, February 15 for one-hour sessions at 5:30 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. Unwind and breathe in fresh energy amidst the thriving plant life of the Dickinson Family Education Conservatory. The one-hour sound bath is led by San Diego–based master sound healer Jazmine Amelia, alongside nine seasoned practitioners from My Sound Bath Collective, her global network of certified sound healing and ceremony leaders.
