The Neighborhood House in Logan Heights became the heart of the Mexican and Mexican American community in San Diego. Begun in 1914 by a group of wealthy Victorian socially progressive women including Mary and Helen Marston as a settlement house with the explicit goal of “Americanizing” Mexican immigrants, it evolved over time to be a site of community activism and civic participation for the next generation of Mexican American youth walking through its doors. Colloquially known as La Neighbor, the Neighborhood House was the nexus of relations in Logan Heights and offered integral services like health care, food distribution, English-language classes, a community oven, citizenship classes, and enrichment activities. This new exhibition brings together the written history of the house, along with nearly twenty new oral history interviews from former Logan Heights residents and Neighborhood House participants who were impacted by its services. The Neighborhood House Association continues today commemorating its 110th anniversary as a much different organization since its founding. Examining the history of Neighborhood House through the first sixty years shows us the ways in which individuals and governments have responded to pervasive social issues like poverty and lack of access to health care and education. It also shows the ways in which community is built and the next generation is fostered, despite continued vulnerability and the challenges posed by policy and planning decisions outside of local control. Synopsis: "The Waiting Game" tells the little-known story of a renegade basketball league that inspired today’s NBA – and the mostly black players who have had to fight for decades for fair compensation and recognition. The ABA innovated pro basketball with the 3-point shot and slam dunk contest, and embraced black culture in ways that the NBA had not yet. And despite the pioneering way the players of the ABA players played basketball, when the two leagues “merged”, ABA players were forgotten in a business deal gone bad. "The Waiting Game" follows a dogged not-for-profit’s pursuit of benefits for former ABA players now struggling to survive. While the NBA generates $10+ billion a year, former ABA athletes struggle to buy life-saving medicines, avoid eviction, and worse. This documentary is about the fight to get them their due. Make Tiny Ceramics! Two upcoming dates to choose from: Saturday, November 1, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Sunday, December 14, 2 - 4 p.m. Join us in the land of miniatures. You will learn how to throw pottery on a mini wheel and no previous pottery experience is necessary! This is a great way to try wheel throwing and learn how to center clay that is less intimidating and less commitment, and if you love it and want to learn more, the Craft Collective has a variety of weekday evening and weekend full-size ceramic wheel classes to choose from! In this 2-hour class, you will watch step-by-step how to use a mini wheel and will learn how to center the clay and open it up to form tiny pots, bowls, or plates. You will create 1-3 tiny pots over the class period. This class is a great way to learn the basics of a wheel on a small scale. It is also a small class setting, so you can get personalized one-on-one support. At the end of the class you can choose glaze colors, and once your pieces have dried a bit, they will be smoothed, trimmed, glazed and fired for you. Grab a friend or family member who’s been curious about ceramics and come join me in creating tiny pottery! Projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after class. No experience necessary. Celebrate Native American Month at the Barona Cultural Center & Museum. Experience the award-winning exhibit featuring the short film "Nya’waap Illyuw Uuchyuwp – Our Way of Knowing" and see "Sinyohow Haawaakm ‘Aaknach [Sin-yo-how Haa-waa-km Aak-nach]," the newest film in the Kumeyaay Philosophy Series. Join Sinyohow [Sin-yo-how] as she teaches her twin boys how to care for the creatures around them and each other. This second film in the series brings to life the traditional teachings and oral histories of the Barona people. These stories were told to teach lessons on how to live well and be good members of the community. Barona Museum has worked tirelessly over the past eight years to bring these important stories back to the Kumeyaay community and the public. Step into a world of color, movement, and imagination with "El Alebrije," A Step Beyond’s vibrant reimagining of "The Nutcracker" through dance, theater, music, and puppetry — taking place November 7 & 8 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. This original production features over 150 youth performers (ages 8–18), a student-run technical crew, guest parent performers, and breathtaking storytelling and puppetry in collaboration with the San Diego Guild of Puppetry and Bocón Youth Arts. The story follows María, a young girl celebrating her Quinceañera, who receives a mystical Alebrije and is whisked into a magical dream journey across Mexico. Along the way, she encounters imagery inspired by Día de los Muertos, Frida Kahlo, and mariachi traditions—discovering the power of connection, heritage, and love. "El Alebrije" is more than a performance; it’s a community celebration. Last year’s production drew over 1,000 attendees across three shows, uniting families, volunteers, and artists in a dazzling display of creativity and collaboration.
