  • Curated by: Yvette Roman and Natalia Ventura Cuéntame is an Far South, Border North campaign created by Yvette Roman and natalia ventura. The campaign aims to strengthen borderlands consciousness through intergenerational relationship-building, storytelling, and art-making. For our final exhibition we intend to display artwork, documentation and audio captured throughout 2023-2024. As a collective, Cuéntame invited emerging artists from San Diego and Tijuana to collaborate on an exhibition capturing the oral history of elders in our San Ysidro community living at Villa Merced. Nine emerging artists will display artwork at The Front Arte y Cultura. Six of the artists were selected through a call for entry, one is our Cuentame intern, and two are FS/BN grantees. Dates: Opening Reception: 5-7 p.m. June 1 Elder Brunch: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 6 Closing Reception: 6-8 p.m. June 7 Artist’s Statement: Yvette and natalia created Cuéntame as a way to honor the labor and legacy of elders in their San Diego border communities. Cuéntame is a community project that uses art as a method for capturing, archiving, and telling the stories of elders. The project aims to build generational bonds, pass on generational wisdom, strengthen a sense of belonging, and create meaningful opportunities for artists in our border community. Our hope is that the relationship formed between the artists, elders, and viewers in this process contributes to a stronger borderlands consciousness in each generation, and ultimately a more empowered border community. • Celebrate the arrival of spring at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park with the return of Spring Safari featuring Butterfly Jungle. Spring is the season to get outdoors, spend time with family and experience bold, colorful new adventures. Spring Safari will shine a spotlight on the incredible local wildlife in the Southwest region, including monarch butterflies. California is a winter refuge for western monarchs. Unique to our region, western monarchs are in danger of vanishing, and their numbers have plummeted by more than 99% in recent years. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance scientists are leading efforts to protect and raise awareness about the plight of western monarchs and other native San Diego butterflies, and Spring Safari guests will learn about how they can help. Throughout the event, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park will be filled with springtime treats and festivities around every corner. Guests will enjoy live entertainment from the high-energy dance crew The Bee Team, the musical duo the Bluebirds and the talented juggler Bee Plus, among others. An array of strawberry-themed food and beverages will be available for purchase to enhance the “all things spring” experience. As part of Spring Safari, the Safari Park will feature optional premium Butterfly Jungle experiences. The Butterfly Jungle Safari experience will once again invite visitors to wander through the Hidden Jungle aviary among hundreds of butterflies, have a chance to feed them and learn about their critical role in the ecosystem. Separately, the all-new Wildlife Photo Trek: Butterly Jungle will enable guests to spend one hour inside Butterfly Jungle photographing the birds and butterflies. Spring Safari featuring Butterfly Jungle will take place March 16 through May 12. The Butterfly Jungle habitat is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Premium Butterfly Jungle experiences are not included with admission.
