The San Diego Arab Film Festival presents the classic Iranian film "The Survivor" directed by Seifollah Dad. The film is set in Haifa and illustrates the experiences of Palestinians under Israeli occupation. It is based on the Ghassan Kanafani novel "Returning to Haifa." Starring Jamal Soliman, Alaa El Din Koksh and Salma Al-Masri, this historical drama tells the story of a Palestinian grandmother who returns to Haifa to find out what happened to her grandson who was separated from his parents when they were forced to leave their home when Israel took control of Haifa. The screening will take place at 7 p.m., October 18, at the Museum of Photographic Arts at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. A traditional Palestinian dinner (served cafeteria style) will be available for purchase. Options include Musakan (baked chicken with salted onions, olive oil and sumac) and Mujadara (vegetarian dish of lentils and rice with caramelized onions and plain yogurt). The sharp, high-pitched “chck”s of Yellow-rumped Warblers filter through the foliage above us. We may spot a majestic Northern Harrier skimming low over the marsh, looking for mice. Bakunawa Market is an ancestral and spiritual marketplace rooted in Filipino heritage and healing. Inspired by the Babaylan, the healers and spirit-keepers of pre-colonial Philippines, the market offers a sacred space to remember our roots, reconnect with ancestral wisdom, and restore spiritual balance. The free, two-day community event features 30+ makers, healers, and artists – from ceramists, jewelers, and visual artists to herbalists, tarot readers, energy workers, and culinary creators – whose work reflects ancestral wisdom, decolonial practices, and spiritual connection. The Bakla Collective will also be featured, showcasing Queer Filipinx creators and centering equity and representation within San Diego’s creative community. Enjoy live performances, a Sunday workshop lineup – including Intro to Mediumship, Zero-Waste Candle Making, and Yoga + Sound: Collective Healing – and Kamayan by Kujo Eats (Sunday, 5-7 p.m.). Kamayan, meaning "by hand" in Tagalog, is a traditional communal feast where guests share food with their hands, scooping rice and dishes on a table lined with banana leaves. On October 22, 2025, pianist Aleck Karis and Susan Narucki will be presenting a concert of songs for soprano and piano, ranging from the late Romantic music of French composer Cécile Chaminade to a relatively recent song cycle written by the American composer Allen Anderson. They will also be performing early twentieth century works with lush harmonies - rarely-heard songs by Alexander Zemlinsky and Anton Webern. In addition, Aleck Karis will be performing two short works for solo piano, one by Ravel and one by Poulenc, which will serve as a beautiful connecting thread. "What I believe is magical about hearing classical art songs is that the audience hears great poetry come to life through the composer's imagination and our response to it, as performers. As a singer, I am fascinated by the seemingly endless range of emotional expression that I find within this intimate art form, and sharing that with audiences is my life's joy. We also utilize supertitles to create more immediacy for the listener. The Greater San Diego Chamber Orchestra, directed by Dr. Angela Yeung, presents a concert honoring the Saints and the faithful departed in anticipation of All Saints and All Souls Days. The program includes Boyce's "Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day," Charpentier's "Pour un reposoir," Borodin's "Au Couvent," Ravel's "Le Tombeau de Couperin" and Pavane "pour une infante défunte." Soprano Emily Ortlieb will perform "Pie Jesu" by Lili Boulanger, and the aria “The Field of the Dead” from Prokofiev's film score for the historical drama, "Alexander Nevsky." Off the Shelf Games in El Cajon is excited to announce the launch of the San Diego County Board Game Scavenger Hunt, kicking off Friday, October 17! We are collaborating with six other local board game stores and the event offers over $600 in prizes. Participants can visit any participating store to pick up a free Scavenger Hunt scoresheet and complete fun challenges as they travel between locations. Once finished, they can turn in their completed scoresheet at any store to be entered into store-specific prize drawing and Grand Prize drawings.
