Día de los Muertos Storytime with Ms. Jackie In honor of Nuestra Cultura and Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), Ms. Jackie will read stories, sing and play guitar. Followed by a sugar skull craft, while supplies last. Welcome families to Stay and Play! This program is focused towards children 0-5 years old and their caregivers. Every week we will offer snacks and refreshments, a Storytime and craft to encourage early literacy, and free play to develop fine motor skills. Select dates will include a representative from the community to come speak about various subjects relevant to children under the age of 5. There will be play stations set up for children to explore, learn and play while adults will be able to connect, learn and relax. Celebrate Halloween at the Museum and meet spiders, hissing cockroaches, and a bearded dragon with EcoVivarium on Friday, October 31, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Plus, kiddos wearing Halloween costumes can take part in our sticker trick or treat! The event will include a live presentation, meet & greet*, storytime, and a special craft! Pre-registration is not required. Free with Museum admission. Opportunities to meet the animals are limited, and timed tickets will be provided upon check-in. *Meet and greet is entirely contingent upon the animals’ well-being. We recommend arriving at the Museum early to maximize your chances of meeting the animals. A Hold Harmless form is required to be filled out for all guests who want to meet the animals. An intimate short film festival, listed on IMDb, The San Diego Short Film Festival (SDSFF) celebrates the art of storytelling through short films of various genres, showcasing the work of talented filmmakers from San Diego and around the world. CipherHacks is a free, student-led cybersecurity and computer science hackathon designed for high school students across San Diego. Over two days, participants will team up to design, code, and present projects while building technical skills, collaborating with peers, and connecting with industry mentors. The event is open to all skill levels — from first-time coders to experienced developers. Students will have access to hands-on workshops, mentorship, and panel discussions featuring both college students and industry professionals. The program Artist Statement 101 focuses on strategies for writing a dynamic general artist statement. With a combination of presentation and group conversation led by curator and writer Elizabeth Rooklidge, participants will come away from the session with a concrete plan for writing a statement, as well as a store of generative techniques to use now and throughout the future. Every short story needs conflict, intriguing characters, realistic dialogue, consistent point of view, and a solid structure in less than 10,000 words. In this student directed class, we will cover all these elements, but in the order and at the pace determined by the participants. Where are you in your writing? Are you just starting out? Are you struggling with an incomplete story? Are you an experienced writer in need of motivation and fresh input from a supportive group? Do you need help with plot and outline? Does your dialogue sound unnatural? We will answer these questions with writing exercises and encouraging critiques. This class is for new or continuing students. So you’ve finished writing your novel — what next? What do published novelists do between that raw first draft and the final manuscript to make their plots sizzle and their prose sing? The key lies in reworking your manuscript until your writing jumps off of the page. If you have completed the first draft of a novel, this workshop will help you develop skills to shape your plot for maximum dramatic impact and give life and texture to characters, dialogue, and setting. Ekphrastic poets find their inspiration in the visual. Their poems imagine, describe, or expand upon the “story” of an image or work of art. Every ekphrastic poem is its own work of art, separate but related to the visual inspiration. In this workshop, you will learn about well-known and not-so-well-known ekphrastic poems, and you will learn a methodology so that you can confidently approach this exciting cross-genre space. You will work in the Inspirations Gallery and create one or more unique poems. You will have the option to share your work aloud, as well as past poems, in a book in the gallery.
