  • Explore ceramic handbuilding & funky glazes! Tuesdays, July 22, 29, August 5, 12, 26 From 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Select a date from the drop-down menu. In this 5-week series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional pieces with an emphasis on decorative techniques. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with underglazes, slips, glaze, and various experimental materials. Students will complete multiple projects throughout the course with an artistic and creative approach to decorative designs. Inspired by printmaking, painting and drawing, we will explore image transfers, mark making, layering, stencils, and more! Through the use of technique and materials, students will explore the fusion of 2D art and 3D form. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors through the course. The instructor will have a wide array of custom decorative materials for use and sale. All materials provided. Additional materials available via the instructor for a fee. Mondays, July 21, 28, August 4, 11, 25 From 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. In this 5-week class, instructor Lydia Kardos will teach the basics of handbuilding to create functional and sculptural ceramics. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with glazes. Students will complete various projects throughout the course, learning the basics of clay materials and handbuilding — skills necessary to work independently in open studio. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors. All materials provided.   • Learn to weave a bread basket! Saturday, July 19, from 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. Basketry is an ancient art, practiced by many peoples and cultures. Traditional basket makers used readily available materials, such as sweet grass, pine needles, willow, and thin strips of ash or oak. Marsha teaches Appalachian-style basketry which is a functional form of basketry used for everyday activities. Thus, the basket names often reflect their functions, such as Market Basket, Egg Basket, Herb Drying Basket, and others. Wow your friends and enhance your table with a hand woven Bread Basket. This basket is suitable for beginning basket weavers and includes basic weaving skills that you can use for many future projects. You’ll have a choice of colors for the center section and top off your creation with real leather handles. The Bread Basket measures 12” long x 5” wide and 5” high. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome.   • Get ready to pedal with a purpose! On Friday, June 20, Belmont Village La Jolla (3880 Nobel Dr.) will host its third annual bike-a-thon as part of The Longest Day, a nationwide event supporting the Alzheimer’s Association. From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., residents, staff, and community members will ride a recumbent bike in 15-minute shifts to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s and we’d love for you to be part of the action. Each ride symbolizes the daily challenges faced by those affected by the disease. With a $25 donation, anyone can ride alongside others, with proceeds benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association San Diego Chapter to help fund critical research and care.

  • Learn to needle felt! Saturday, July 12, from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Have you ever wished you’d stumble upon a tiny fairy house while walking in a deep forest? Join felting artist Sophie Ancel in this 3-hour workshop where you’ll learn to make your own little house using needle felting techniques. Students will use natural wool roving and batting, felt, beads and simple embroidery. The class requires the use of sharp felting needles and we will cover how to safely use felting needles. Guards will also be provided. Each student will have the option of creating a tiny home equipped with a door, window, and decorated with flowers and leaves. This little home can be used as a box as the roof can act as a lid! You will be given a tiny light for added fairy house magic. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome.
