Participants will build on their foundational skills, improving their technique and musicality while learning to play together as a cohesive group.Orchestra OneRehearses on Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m. –6:45 p.m.Orchestra One is the intermediate level of the program, perfect for musicians who have been learning their instrument for several years and are comfortable reading music and playing in multiple positions. The repertoire is thoughtfully selected to challenge early- to mid-intermediate players while ensuring a rewarding and enjoyable experience.North Coast Strings OrchestraRehearses on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.The North Coast Strings Orchestra is the pinnacle of our program, led by the inspirational and award-winning conductor Alyze Dreiling. Designed for advanced players, this ensemble offers the chance to perform classical and contemporary repertoire in its original, unadapted form.   • J.T. Burke’s highly anticipated exhibition, "Paradise," makes its San Diego debut at the Mandell Weiss Gallery on October 4, 2024, offering viewers an exploration of myth and utopia. Opening as part of the San Diego Ballet’s 35th season launch event, "Overture," the exhibit promises an engaging blend of contemporary art and performance. Exhibit runs through Jan. 17, 2025.Burke draws inspiration from vintage costume jewelry, sourced from swap meets, garage sales, and forgotten drawers, transforming these discarded artifacts into luminous visions of an imagined utopia. Through intricate digital manipulation, he creates surreal compositions that blur the line between the real and the fantastical, inviting viewers to lose themselves in the intricate details where the mundane meets the mythical.The opening coincides with "Overture," the San Diego Ballet's season debut event celebrating its 35th anniversary.   • North City is set to host a free outdoor movie night on Friday, October 25, featuring Disney’s "Coco"! The festivities begin at 5 p.m. with games, family activities, and movie character meet-and-greets, followed by the movie screening at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature a Mariachi Band, Dia de los Muertos decor with an ofrenda, a festive straw bale and pumpkin display, and special appearances by Coco’s beloved characters, Miguel and Héctor.Attendees will receive complimentary popcorn and can purchase an array of bites from North City’s eateries. Options include favorites like pizza from Buona Forchetta, sliders, fries, and other bites from Draft Republic, custom ice cream from award-winning Wynston’s Ice Cream, make-your-own cookie kits from Maya’s Cookies, and handheld bites from Milonga Empanadas. For the adults, beer, wine, and cocktails to enjoy in the movie event area will be available for purchase from Draft Republic.   • On Monday, December 2, Grammy-nominated pianist Andrius Žlabys will perform a varied program of works by J.S. Bach and César Franck and his own composition Echoes of Light, an homage to Mozart. Žlabys states, “At the center of the piece, there are two fragments from Mozart’s Requiem. [What follows is] influenced by Carl Sagan’s writings. I imagine fragments of Mozart’s Requiem continuing to echo through space and time, perhaps never again detected, yet always present.” Žlabys has received acclaim for his appearances with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Rotterdam Symphony, and Philharmonic Orchestra of Buenos Aires. All concerts are preceded by a pre-concert talk at 6:45 p.m. and are followed by a reception with the artists in the Sharon & Joel Labovitz Entry Hall.
