  • This St. Patrick’s Day, the rooftop at Andaz San Diego is turning green. Perched above the Gaslamp Quarter, The Rooftop by STK is celebrating with festive food and drink specials alongside the hotel’s famously sweeping skyline views, which are arguably some of the best vantage points in downtown San Diego for sunset, city lights and holiday bites and drinks. Guests can dig into Irish-inspired bites like Shaved Corned Beef Sliders, a Corned Beef Grilled Cheese with seasoned fries, and Corned Beef Fries topped with beer cheese, while sipping themed cocktails including the Pot O’ Gold with Teeling Irish Whiskey, peach liqueur and lemon, or the refreshing Irish Maid with honey and cucumber. The rooftop will also pour green beer and Jameson shots, making it an easy spot to kick off – or end – a St. Patrick’s Day celebration high above the city.
  • Songwriter Sanctuary can't think of a better way to celebrate Women's History Month than by getting a few of San Diego's beloved Baby Bushkas together. (For those who are unfamiliar with the internationally acclaimed Kate Bush tribute project that is/was Baby Bushka, go forth and familiarize...we'll wait). With that project currently on a potentially permanent hiatus, we thought it'd be cool to invite Marie Haddad (Midnight Bush), Nancy Ross (Fancy Bush), and Heather Nation (Sugar Bush) to come share their original work with the Songwriter Sanctuary community. For those wishing to practice a little community care, please come out a little early (5:30-6:30 p.m.) for our Pre-Show Pantry Jam to help fill the Normal Heights United community pantry, fridge, and closet with unopened/unexpired food or gently used clothing. Stick around to enjoy busking at dusk, provided on our unplugged “sidewalk stage” by Calamity! About the Artists Marie Haddad: A San Diego Music Award–winning singer-songwriter and composer, Haddad has shared stages with artists like Christine and the Queens and George Benson and has had her songs placed on popular television shows like Dance Moms, RuPaul’s Drag Race, and more. Whether solo at the piano, contributing arrangements to her colleagues' projects, or fronting a full band, she invites listeners to experience beautiful genre-bending soundscapes that transcend the formulaic limitations of traditional pop music. Nancy Ross: A musical theatre performer since childhood, Nancy Ross has built a vibrant creative career that has taken her to stages across the globe. Nancy regularly collaborates with top musicians and local venues to produce music and arts events that mix flavors of nostalgia and fantasy together to showcase her own wonderfully weird world of improv and performance art . Beyond her own musical projects, Nancy is also a dedicated teaching artist who directs youth productions and creates music and movement programs for young performers. Heather Nation: A jill-of-all-trades on vocals, guitar, bass, keys, and synth, Heather is a self-producing songwriter and seasoned session musician who tours with Lauren Mayberry of CHVRCHES and Death Valley Girls. Whether in her home studio or onstage layering shimmering guitars and soulful harmonies, she creates immersive, rhythm-rich performances that make a mark. Event Details Location: Normal Heights United Church. 4650 Mansfield St, San Diego, CA 92116. Suggested Donation: $10+ online or at door; optional “pass the hat” after intermission. No one is turned away for lack of funds. All Ages: We do not censor our artists; please check out the lineup and make the best decision for your family. Parking: Street parking. Food/Drink: Sponsored by Babe Beverages and Duck Foot Brewing Company. Guests are welcome to bring their own food into the venue (please eat and dispose of waste respectfully). There are so many delicious restaurants within walking distance - feel free to grab something take-out and bring it in! Accessibility: Normal Heights United is a 100 year-old building with a non-traditional seating arrangement, but we want guests to feel safe and supported. Please send any accommodation requests to Molly at mollyrose(at)nhunited(dot)org at least five (5) business days prior to the event. Our online RSVP form also includes an optional field where you can disclose accessibility preferences and/or requests. Visit songwritersanctuary-sd.com for accessibility and community care statements. • K. Wayne Yang, PhD | Professor, Ethnic Studies and Provost of John Muir College, UC San Diego Dr. Yang’s research and teaching interests focus on how our conception and experience of learning are shaped by settler colonialism. His recent book, "A Third University Is Possible," explores the historical legacy of the Morrill Land Act of 1862, by which acres of Indigenous lands were taken by governments in Union states to raise funds for new universities to educate settlers in agriculture and science. At USD, how can we hold ourselves accountable beyond land acknowledgements to the Kumeyaay people? He writes, "Within the colonizing university also exists a decolonizing education. A Third University is a practical workplace. We must go through the critique to get to the work."
  • Saturday, May 9 marks the 34th anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, the nation’s largest one-day food drive. Each year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers collect non-perishable food donations left by customers at their mailboxes. The food goes directly to the San Diego Food Bank and other local pantries to help families in San Diego County who are facing hunger. Over the past 30 years, the drive has collected more than 1.94 billion pounds of food nationwide. Yet the need remains high—over 47 million Americans, including 13 million children and 7.4 million seniors, experience food insecurity. The drive is especially important in spring, when many food pantries run low on supplies and school meal programs are unavailable to many children. How to help: Place a bag of non-perishable food by your mailbox on Saturday, May 9, 2026, and your letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it the San Diego Food Bank and other local food pantries. Together, we can help Stamp Out Hunger® National Association of Letter Carriers’ on Facebook / Instagram
  • A line that people sometimes remember regarding moderation belongs to Barry Goldwater: “Extremism in the pursuit of liberty is no vice, moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.” Although Goldwater’s skepticism toward moderation did not fare well in the 1964 presidential election, his words invite us to rethink the nature of moderation and examine who is afraid of this misunderstood virtue and why. In this Knapp Lecture, Aurelian Craiutu, Arthur F. Bentley Professor of Political Science at Indiana University Bloomington, argues that moderation is a complex virtue with many ethical and institutional facets and a fascinating genealogy which is often neglected. His lecture will address the following questions: What kind of virtue is political moderation? What does it mean to be a moderate voice in politics? What are the limits and benefits of moderation? Can moderation be a winning card in our hyper-polarized political world?
