KPBS Kids offers a wide range of programming to cultivate diverse audiences and educate, enlighten, and entertain families in the San Diego region. Events serve to create a connection between KPBS in the San Diego community and beloved PBS Kids programming. KPBS Kids also serves as a connector in the community to bring together partner organizations and facilitate the sharing of resources.

Celebrate Valentine's Day weekend by making art with or for someone you love! In this workshop led by artist Natalie M. Godinez, participants will learn the basics of stamp carving, how to create a DIY pattern, and how to use found materials to create your own stamps. You will leave with a hand-carved stamp, a recycled stamp, and a hand-printed bandana. We hope you join us at ArtReach for this artist-led workshop! About the Artist: Natalie M Godinez (she/her/ella) is a Los Angeles-based artist, educator, and community advocate raised in Tijuana, México. Godinez explores memories, identity, and relationships to places and language through textiles, printmaking, and collaboration. She holds a Bachelor of Art in Applied Design degree from San Diego State University and she has been teaching art since 2009 across California. About Barbara Baxter Barbara Baxter studied wine academically at the Sorbonne in Paris and has continued her inquiry into the heritage of wine for more than a decade. She created visitor education programs for Francis Ford Coppolaʼs Rubicon Estate and has worked for Napa Valleyʼs most prestigious wineries: Sterling Vineyards and Opus One. She is the editor of Planet Wine and has also made wine in Napa Valley. Baxter has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, has lectured at major museums and universities in California, including the Getty Malibu, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Athenaeum Arts & Music Library, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center in Orange County, and The Huntington. Tickets: $60/65 The lecture will be in person at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. There are no physical tickets for this event. Your name will be on an attendee list at the front door. Illume Speaker Series Knapp Lecture On James Baldwin: Racial Progress without Redemption Melvin L. Rogers, PhD | Knapp Chair of Liberal Arts Thursday, February 27, at 6 p.m. IPJ Theatre, Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice The lecture invites the audience to travel back to the 1960s and to think through the assumptions that frame our discussion about racial progress. Baldwin asks us to disentangle our preoccupation with redemption to achieve democratic progress. Advancing democracy through dialogue may mean we don’t completely forget our missteps and trauma. Advancing democracy may involve figuring out how to dialogue, given that the past and present trauma may persist. Melvin L. Rogers, PhD, is the Edna and Richard Salomon Distinguished Professor of Political Science and associate director of the Center for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Brown University. Concert Hour is a music enrichment series presented on the campus of Palomar College for our students, staff, and community by the Palomar College Performing Arts Department. This Week’s Performing Arts Will Be Located in Performance Lab D -10 Alyze Dreiling was born in Detroit, Michigan. She began her violin studies with Mischa Mischakoff .The Detroit Symphony and the Music Study Club of Metropolitan Detroit sponsored her education with Mischakoff. Ms. Dreiling graduated from Indiana University where she studied with Josef Gingold. She holds a BM in Violin Performance from Indiana University and MA from United States International University with an emphasis on Orchestral Performance. Ms. Dreiling was an invited semi- finalist in the European Union Conducting Competition in 2018. She has attended masterclasses with Zoltan Rozsnyai, Gunther Neuhold,, Neil Thomson and Dr. Scott Weiss and Philip Greenberg. Ms. Dreiling was the founding Artistic Director and Conductor of Classics for Kids and currently is Artistic Director and the Emeritus Conductor of YPO Festival Orchestra, Soloists Ensemble and Soloists Sinfonietta and was recently awarded 3nd prize in the American Prize Competition in the conductor of youth orchestra division.
