Her next release, in 2014, Sunshine, hit number 13 on the Billboard Blues Chart and led the band to landing a performance on the hit BBC2 show Later with Jools Holland. Davina and the Vagabonds’ shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill, and tender gospel passages. Davina’s voice and stage presence defy category in a different way. Davina has been compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice: she is a true original. Bringing you 100 years of American music and Davina’s originals, which lend themselves to the American Songbook, the band brings edgy nostalgia to older generations and fresh new music to younger ears. This rollicking quintet is held together by Sowers’ keyboard playing, with acoustic bass, drums, and a spicy trumpet and trombone horn section. The group’s focused, clean sound and emphasis on acoustic instruments is novel to both blues and jazz worlds, and sets the show closer to New Orleans than to Chicago. Celebrate the legacy of long-time San Diego resident Robert Irwin, who created innovative site-specific artworks that explore the effects of light through interventions in space and architecture. Taking inspiration from Irwin's use of light, we will play with its natural and artificial sources by casting shadows in a shadow puppet theater and learning the differences between translucent, transparent, and opaque objects. Art activity: Inspired by the radiant glass sculpture Spanish Fan (1995), on view in MCASD’s Sculpture Garden, create a faux-stained glass rainbow with colored cellophane paper and hang them on your favorite window in Prebys Learning Center. Taking place in the heart of Downtown Chula Vista, the celebration will be filled with a community altar, an altar contest, dance performances, a Catrin and Catrina Ensemble Contest for cash prizes, food vendors, and themed photo opportunities throughout the neighborhood. At the core of the cultural tradition is the community altar, a symbol signifying love and remembrance. The South Bay neighborhood encourages the community to participate in the touching tradition by bringing photos of loved ones who have passed and place them in the neighborhood’s community altar. As a holiday dedicated to celebrating the lives of those who have passed, the altar will be a collection of memories that will be cherished by all. Along with the community altar, there will be chances to win cash prizes by participating in the contests hosted by the Downtown Chula Vista Association. This year’s altar contest will feature three different categories: best altar created by school/students, best altar created by the general public, and best overall altar.
