Since 2009, Space 4 Art has provided affordable housing and studios to 140 artists in San Diego. "The Possibility of Something Happening" explores the phenomenological nature of chance across art practices and human encounters. All participating artists are past or present tenants or closely associated artists who have activated and experienced the possibilities within this expansive site. From the organizers: Casa Familiar, this year celebrating its 50th anniversary, is pleased to announce the exhibition WOMEN, WORDS & WEAVING – Mujeres, Palabras y Tejidos as part of Casa Familiar’s 16th annual Dia de la Mujer. The Dia de la Mujer exhibition will be celebrated with an opening reception on March 4, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at The FRONT Arte & Cultura (147 W. San Ysidro Blvd, 92173.) Continuing its long tradition in San Ysidro and San Diego, Casa Familiar’s Dia de la Mujer celebration brings together a wide array of international and local artists over several events to elevate the works of BIPOC women and non-binary artists. It is an open invitation for artists to explore relevant issues of identity, gender, politics, community and spirituality. This year’s exhibition is curated by Katie Ruiz, Artist and the Artistic Director of the Women’s Museum of California. Ruiz holds a bachelor’s degree of Art from Northern Arizona University and a Master’s degree from The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture. Her emphasis on Fiber art, painting and mixed media is evident in her artwork and curation. The exhibition showcases the works of 27 artists from 4 different countries including guest artist Natalia Toledo, Oaxacan poet who writes in Spanish & Zapotec, as well as Irma Sofia Poeter, Celia Herrera Rodriguez, Maria de Los Angeles, Alessandra Moctezuma, Delana Delgado, among other talented participants. The commemoration will include an exhibition and parallel activities taking place during the months of March & April, such as the special concert by The San Diego Symphony on March 25. From the gallery: For her exhibition Graft at ICA San Diego, artist Edra Soto (b.1971, Puerto Rico; lives and works in Chicago, IL) continues to create the site-specific installations that have defined this project since 2012. Using a range of materials from aluminum and PVC, to concrete and wood, Soto generates a sculptural language to express her experience navigating the Puerto Rican diaspora. For more than a decade, she has transposed two common and beloved elements of Puerto Rican residential architecture into foreign environments: the geometrically-patterned rejas (wrought-iron gates) and quiebrasoles (decorative concrete breeze blocks) that surround many of the island’s homes. This reconstruction of such distinctly Puerto Rican structures in faraway places offers a poetic meditation on national identity, displacement, and belonging. Read more here. During Meet the Artist hours, the public is invited to speak with Edra Soto and contribute to an upcoming project. While in residence at the ICA San Diego, Soto will be crafting a fabric and metal flag out of four-pointed aluminum stars. This project, an expanded version of Soto’s 2021 work, Tropicalamerica 21, takinges inspiration from the all-black Puerto Rican flag, which has become a symbol of Puerto Rican independence, resistance to colonialism, and civil disobedience since 2016. Soto invites the community to join her in the construction of this flag, and will teach visitors how to make the four-pointed aluminum stars. From the gallery: Quint Gallery is pleased to announce Cosmic Symmetries, an exhibition of new paintings by Kelsey Brookes. An opening reception with the artist will take place on Saturday, February 25 from 6-8 p.m. Throughout his career, Brookes has painted to explore the scientific concepts that make up the world, applying abstraction to the concrete and testing the limits of reality. In these recent works, Brookes has been driven by symmetry and mathematic principles which govern nature. Symmetry is both a fundamental element and a tool— to understand and discover the workings of the universe, which in turn reveals the underlying structures and patterns of the environment around us. From this starting point, he studies both what it is about symmetry that attracts us and how its rules have been used to describe the behavior of particles and fields in the physical world. His paintings, with meticulous attention to detail, contain an array of visual stimuli that first disorient and then organize around a perimeter of patterns and undulating lines. Brookes explores how our environment fixes our attention and in response, builds paintings using those same principles. In some works, viewers also find miniature figures and text hidden within the patterns that foreground the canvas. Brookes has often experimented with ways of seeing; in the past he has used light sensitive paints that become illuminated under UV, and mirrored platforms which created symmetry in three-dimensional structures. It is easy to miss the mushrooms being foraged by small gnomes accompanied by white rabbits, imagery associated with the effects of psychedelic substances. In these works, such figures encounter the symmetry of the universe he builds, creating a sensorial reaction of curiosity and amusement when discovered. Often characterized by the influence of his early years as a molecular biologist, Brookes bridges the worlds of art and science by showing the dichotomy of each discipline. His practice takes ideas and forms found in molecular structures, number sequences, and logic, and grants non-scientists access to the invisible world of atoms, which make up everything that ever has been or will be. Brookes has had solo exhibitions in San Diego, Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, London and Berlin and his work lives in the permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Frederick R.
