Exhibition Dates: September 16–November 11, 2023 Opening Reception: Friday, September 15, 6:30–8:30 PM The Athenaeum is pleased to present a special exhibition of works by late French artist Françoise Gilot, featuring many never-before-exhibited lithographs. Born in 1921 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, Françoise Gilot's career spanned eight decades, with works ranging from visual art to poetry and prose, including best-selling memoirs. Gilot met legendary artist Pablo Picasso when she was 21, the same year she had her first Paris exhibition. She counted among her friends leading artists of the period, including Matisse, Braque, and Cocteau. Gilot and Picasso raised their two children together until separating in 1953. Gilot married artist Luc Simon in 1955, with whom she had a daughter before divorcing in 1962. Gilot began visiting the United States in the 1960s to exhibit her work and maintained studios in La Jolla, New York, and Paris. With a degree in philosophy from the University of Paris and another in English literature from Cambridge University, she became an accomplished writer and poet, authoring and illustrating several books. Over time, her art practice expanded to include printmaking techniques such as monographs and aquatints. Gilot's children appear as the subjects of many of her works, along with themes of birds, emblems, and Greek mythology. Gilot's childhood in France and travels to Greece and Asia are also frequent subjects. Later in life, Gilot married Jonas Salk, developer of the polio vaccine, and lived for a long time in San Diego. The Athenaeum hosted a private reception and pop-up show in 2022 in celebration of Gilot's one hundredth birthday. Gilot continued to paint until her death in June 2023. The exhibition can be viewed in the Joseph Clayes III Gallery at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (1008 Wall Street, La Jolla, CA 92037) during open hours, Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Appointments are not required. Third Sunday Craft is a monthly gathering of creative writers that fosters support, inspiration, and community. More than craft classes, Third Sunday Craft will help you construct and sustain a writing practice. New focus topics for each session will challenge writers to explore and expand their craft. Generative writing prompts will encourage you to grow and learn in exciting new ways. Sharing your work within a safe, supportive community will help you discover and strengthen your voice. In honor of Día de los Muertos, the historic adobe hacienda at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park will be dressed up with colorful decorations and a customary ofrenda table dedicated to the Carrillo family. On Saturday, Oct. 28, the park will open after hours for a family-friendly celebration that includes dinner, a no-host bar, crafts for kids and the movie “Coco,” all set in the beautiful historic home and gardens of a Hollywood legend. Dinner: 5 - 6:15 p.m. Movie: 6:30 p.m. (running time 109 minutes) Tickets are available by pre-sale only. Admission is $25 per person; children 3 years and younger are free but still need to register. Enjoy a Mexican-themed picnic dinner. A no-host bar featuring prickly pear cactus margaritas, spirits, beer, wine and soft drinks will be available. Mexican hot chocolate, popcorn and snacks will also be available for purchase. Crafts will be provided for kids and Leo’s historic hacienda will be open for touring prior to showtime. The movie, activities and dinner are included with admission, you will select your meal when you register, children 3 and under will automatically be given a toddler meal. One of the primary ways we generate support to provide rigorous science programming to kids in the City Heights community is through our annual fundraiser – the Bubble Up! Gala. This black-tie affair is attended by 300 leaders in the San Diego business, philanthropic, and scientific communities. To inspire the next generation of science leaders, Ocean Discovery Institute creates learning experiences for young people traditionally excluded from science due to race, income status, and educational opportunity. Our students will join high-paying fields, break generational poverty, and change the future of science. After hosting the event for nearly two decades, we are excited to reimagine this year’s event! This year we move from a formal sit-down dinner to a new format with increased opportunities to build relationships, be in community, and come together with a shared purposed – raising critical funds so that thousands of students each year can transform their lives through science.
