  • "We are excited to present the 2025–2026 season of the Athenaeum’s Barbara and William Karatz Chamber Music Series, which features artists who have established themselves as favorites with our audiences and those we enthusiastically welcome for the first time. Our season opens October 20 with cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia, who wowed us a couple seasons ago with a solo recital and will return with pianist Victor Santiago Asuncion in an adventurous program of duos. The season also features two remarkable string quartets (longtime Athenaeum favorites, the Maxwell Quartet, on November 17 and gut string heroes, the Diderot Quartet) on April 14; star pianist Conor Hanick on March 16; early music experts, the Artifex Consort, on May 4; and two of our important teachers, violinist Andrés Cárdenes and cellist Steven Doane, joined by local favorite pianist Ines Irawati, on February 23. Putting these concerts together has been a true labor of love, and we can’t wait to welcome you back in October!" —Kate Hatmaker and Alex Greenbaum, Co-Directors of Chamber Music All concerts are preceded by a pre-concert talk at 6:45 p.m. and are followed by a reception with the artists in the Sharon & Joel Labovitz Entry Hall. The Diderot String Quartet concert is generously sponsored by Sally and Einar Gall. • Announcing the September Cinballera Salon - "Lady of the Ring" and Songs of Middle Earth! "Lady of the Ring" returns, this time at the Villa Montezuma. Cinballera's second-ever show was "Lady of the Ring: A Chamber Ballopera," which was inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien's three-volume masterpiece "Lord of the Rings." The vocal portion of this show was an original chamber opera featuring an assortment of art songs in English and Elvish to tell the story of how a simple group of hobbits saved Middle Earth from the One Ring. The centerpiece of the music is a song cycle "The Road Goes Ever On," which Tolkien himself authorized and co-wrote with composer Donald Swann. Now, we're bringing that one-hour chamber opera out of the archives to present it at the Cinballera Salon. We've moved the monthly Salon from the usual third Monday to the fourth Monday, September 22, which is Hobbit Day in honor of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins's shared birthday. The epic saga is condensed to the simplest tale, featuring only the characters of Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Gollum, Bilbo Baggins, who serves as narrator, and Lady Sauron, the Lady of the Ring. The other portion of the Salon will feature assorted songs and arias which convey the mood of Middle Earth, including Wagner excerpts, folk songs, and outtakes from the original "Lady of the Ring" song list. This intimate event is sure to sell out quickly, so we're selling tickets in advance. Make your reservations now so you won't miss out on "Lady of the Ring!" All the proceeds support the two non-profit organizations, Cinballera and Friends of the Villa Montezuma, and pay the performers. Not all those who wander are lost, so wander to the Villa Montezuma on Hobbit Day for "Lady of the Ring" and other Songs of Middle Earth! Cinballera Entertainment on Facebook / Instagram
