  • One of the most prestigious juried shows in San Diego, the Athenaeum’s 31st Annual Juried Exhibition will be on view this summer in the Clayes Gallery. Nearly 300 artists entered 900 works for consideration. Juror Isabel Casso, Assistant Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, selected the final 25 artists and 35 works to exhibit. The exhibition will continue in the Rotunda Gallery. Prizewinners, including the recipient of the Leslie Von Kolb Memorial Award, will be announced at the opening reception on Friday, July 14, which will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  Artists in the exhibition are Elizabeth Burger, Dillon Chapman, Morgan DeLuna, Raul Espinoza, Angela Figueroa, Kaori Fukuyama, Sarah Garcia, Neville Greene, Sam Grenier, Marina Grize, Becky Guttin, Andres Hernandez, Terri Hughes, Mayce Keeler, Gianna LaPonte, Monica Loss, Maria Mathioudakis, Leslie Nemour, Oriana Poindexter, Vincent Robles, Amir Saadiq, Sean Sarmiento, Michael Upton, Leslye Villaseñor, and Lizzie Zelter.  Juror: Isabel Casso, Assistant Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego Isabel Casso is the Assistant Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Casso’s recent projects include a special exhibition with Carmen Argote and a retrospective of Celia Álvarez Muñoz. Previously, she was the Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, where she organized Grain of a Hand: Drawings with Graphite and a solo exhibition of Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar. She has held positions at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Casso earned an MA in art history from Williams College and a BA in art history and economics from Loyola Marymount University. The exhibition can be viewed in the Joseph Clayes III Gallery at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (1008 Wall Street, La Jolla, CA 92037) during open hours, Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Appointments are not required.   • Offsite Petco Interactive Zone, the Lexus Premier Lot on the corner of Park Blvd and Imperial Ave, will once again be home to several activations during San Diego Comic-Con 2023. Fans can stop by the FREE event, which will feature several activations throughout the week from Thursday, July 20 – Saturday, July 22 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Sunday, July 23 from 10 a.m.,- 4 p.m. There will also be food and beverage available for purchase from themed food trucks. On-site, you’ll find the already-announced fan-favorite Hello Kitty Cafe Truck, which will be serving up sweet treats and even sweeter merch. You’ll also be able to stop by for a “plate-shaking collab” between Marvel and GNC. The protein and vitamin supplements company will be launching three “show-stopping” flavors inspired by iconic Marvel superheroes, including Captain America Birthday Cake, Iron Man S’Mores, and Black Panther Caramel Cookie. Stop by to learn more about GNC’s mission of supporting the health goals for every hero, get free samples, giveaways, and you’ll also find a “strength-defying photobooth”. This “pre-composting” process uses an inoculant of effective microbes to preserve kitchen scraps until you’re ready to incorporate them into your soil or compost bin. Learn how bokashi can be used to increase your organic waste diversion and enrich your soil microbiome. All pre-registered attendees who are residents of unincorporated San Diego County will receive a free kitchen scraps container, courtesy of the County of San Diego.
