Learn to throw ceramics on a wheel! Saturdays, January 10, 17, 24 & February 7, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., with the last class of the series from 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. In this 4-week course, 3-hour per class series (each class is longer than our 5-week series), you’ll build a strong foundation in working with clay on the pottery wheel. Instructor Shachi Shah will teach you how to prepare clay, center it on the wheel, and create forms like cylinders, bowls, and mugs. You’ll also be introduced to trimming techniques and adding surface details like handles and texture. After a break to allow your work to be bisque fired, you’ll return for the final session to glaze and complete the cycle from raw clay to finished ceramic. This is a slow-paced, supportive class where exploration and experimentation are encouraged. Whether you’re brand new to clay or returning after a break, you’ll be guided at your own rhythm — with plenty of space to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow your confidence on the wheel. Projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after the last class. Beginners welcome. Learn to Carve a Spoon! Sunday, December 21, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Beginning spoon carving. In this introduction course of carving Woodworker Paul Maschka will be sharing the ancient style of green wood hand carving with simple but very precise hand tools–a small carving axe, straight blade carving knife and a curved hook knife. With proper techniques, green wood can be intricately sculpted into extremely beautiful, functional and unique pieces of art. Paul specializes in Viking-era cutlery. This Scandinavian style is still being crafted around the world. In this workshop, students will be creating a straight tea spoon or straight cooking spoon. This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. Tools and chopping blocks will be available for purchase after the class. No experience necessary. Learn to throw ceramics on a wheel! Sundays, January 4, 11, 18, 25 & February 8, from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Ages 16+ years welcome! Refine your throwing skills and explore various forms. Weekly demonstrations are given in this intermediate class. Demonstrating forms such as sectional throwing, throwing off the hump, making lids, colored slips, as well as making your own colored clay and designs. In this 5-week course, intermediate students can refine techniques, explore new forms, and build consistency. Individual guidance meets you where you’re at, assisting returning to the wheel with more confidence. The class will begin with an overview of the basics (wedging, centering, pulling, etc) to build a solid foundation and help give students confidence to take on more complex forms. Susanna Peredo Swap is an award-winning producer, journalist, and film director with over twenty-five years of experience as an arts administrator, actor, jazz vocalist, arts advocate, and public relations specialist. While working for the San Diego International Airport Art Program she curated 80+ exhibitions with some of San Diego’s best museums, artists and galleries; as well as a fantastic roster of talent for its performing arts series. She currently serves on the San Diego Museum Council; the Board of Women in Tourism & Hospitality International; the Board of the San Diego Press Club; the Advisory Board for the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego; and Community Advisory Committee for the Burnham Center for Community Advancement. She recently served as the Arts & Culture Co-Lead for World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 and on the Advisory Committee for UCSD-TV’s new ARTS Channel. She has previously served on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Art Institute; as Board Vice President of the Alliance Française de San Diego; Board Vice President of the San Diego REPertory Theatre; and Vice Chair of the Port of San Diego’s Public Art Committee. Susanna is a magna cum laude graduate of San Diego State University where she majored in Humanities and minored in French. She holds a Professional Certificate in The Cycle: Management of Successful Arts and Cultural Organizations from the Devos Institute of Arts Management, University of Maryland; a Professional Certificate in Business for Arts and Nonprofit Arts Organizations from University of San Diego; a Certificate in Photography: Images and Techniques from University of California, San Diego; studied Art History at the Université Paris Sorbonne (Paris IV); and History of Video Art at the École du Louvre in Paris, France. Her passion for the arts inspired her to found Vanguard Culture, a nonprofit uplifting San Diego’s creative workforce.
