The Poway Community Choir proudly announces its upcoming holiday concert, “Joy to the World,” taking place Sunday, December 7 at 6 p.m. at Del Norte High School’s Del Norte Theatre, located at 16601 Nighthawk Lane in San Diego. This festive program will fill the season with choral classics and holiday favorites, all led by the choir’s esteemed director, Brooke Yang. Poway Community Choir was established in 2015 under the direction of Nancy Gray as a part of the Poway Unified School District. She retired in 2023 and Brooke Yang replaced her as Director. The choir performs spring and winter concerts and traveled to Europe this past summer to perform in the 25th Annual International CANTUS MM Music & Culture Festival where they performed in Mirabel Gardens as well as at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. A native of Seoul, South Korea, Ms. Yang has been an active performer in California since 1997. She has appeared at major venues including Herbst Theatre and Davies Symphony Hall and has given numerous benefit concerts supporting pediatric cancer patients, families, and survivors of domestic violence. Ms. Yang earned her Master’s degree in voice from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and is a current member of American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). She became director of the Poway Community Choir in 2024 and now brings her artistry and passion to the San Diego community. Concert tickets:

Lecture speaker event with Dr. Alina Polyakova on the Russian-Ukrainian War moderated by SDSU Professor Mikhail Alexseev. Dr. Alina Polyakova is President and CEO of the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) as well as the Donald Marron Senior Fellow at the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs at the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Dr. Polyakova is a recognized expert on transatlantic relations, European security including Russia and Ukraine, tech policy, and populism. She is the author of the book, "The Dark Side of European Integration," which examines the rise of far-right political movements in Europe, as well as dozens of major policy reports and articles in outlets such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, and The Atlantic, and others. She is a frequent commentator in major media outlets, such as Fox News, CNN, and BBC. Dr. Polyakova is an experienced leader with previous roles as the Founding Director for Global Democracy and Emerging Technology at the Brookings Institution, Director of Research for Europe and Eurasia at the Atlantic Council, among others. She has also held numerous prestigious fellowships, including at the National Science Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and the Fulbright Foundation, among others. She serves on the board of the Free Russia Foundation and is a member of the Leadership Council for Women in National Security (LCWINS) and the Scientific Council of the Elcano Royal Institute. Dr. Polyakova holds a Ph.D. and MA in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a BA in Economics and Sociology from Emory University. Experience a journey of solo flute pieces spanning different cultures and times with musician Pam Vliek Martchev. She will be featuring the flute, alto flute, and piccolo, as well as composers like Marin-Marais, Bozza, Karg-Elert, and more. Pam Vliek Martchev served as principal flute with the Boulder Philharmonic in Colorado for 10 seasons, and has been a guest principal flutist of the San Diego Symphony, Pacific Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Santa Barbara Symphony, Reno Chamber Orchestra, California Chamber Orchestra, and Long Beach Opera. She has been featured on many chamber music series such as La Jolla Summerfest, Art of Elan, Jacaranda, Chamber Music Unbound in Mammoth, Blanco Performing Arts in Texas, the Tannahill Arts Festival in Scotland, Le Salon de Musique, Bruman at UCLA, Dilijan, and LACMA Sundays Live. She is currently a member of the woodwind quintet Presidio Winds. You may have heard her on movie soundtracks, CD recordings, television specials, and in the San Diego pit for broadway shows such as King and I, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, and My Fair Lady. A native of Long Island, NY, she began attending the Manhattan School of Music pre-college program at age 12, and continued another four years for her Bachelor of Music - her primary teachers were Harold Jones and Linda Chesis. During her student years, she won prizes in many competitions, was a soloist with the Long Island and Massapequa Philharmonic, and was featured on WQXR’s Young Artist Showcase. She has been a guest teacher at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC); University of Oregon, Eugene; University of Nevada, Reno; and Manhattan School of Music. Her students have auditioned successfully for conservatory degrees across the country, top prizes in national competitions including the NFA High School Soloist, the National Youth Orchestra, and CA All-Southern and All-State ensembles. She is a Haynes Artist, and is the flute professor at San Diego State University, Pt. A creative strategist and visual storyteller with 25 years of nonprofit leadership, Sarah has guided Outside The Lens from a grassroots organization into a recognized innovator in creative youth development and media literacy, partnering with institutions like The Getty Museum on Voice Out, a regional exhibition that amplifies the perspectives of young artists. Sarah’s leadership philosophy is simple: create conditions for others to thrive. Whether expanding programs like Media Makers—which serves young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities—or securing catalyst funding for Balboa Park's Botanical Building during her tenure at Forever Balboa Park, she leads with curiosity and trust. She’s also the creative mind behind Culture & Cocktails at the San Diego Museum of Art and has presented at Public Lands Alliance and International Placemaking Week conferences. A Minnesota native with degrees in Journalism and Gender & Women's Studies from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Sarah was recently named a 2025 San Diego Magazine Nonprofit Pioneer. The Roy L. Brooks Distinguished Lecture Series was established to bring an African American scholar of distinction or promise to campus. The award is named after Professor Roy L. Brooks, who has been a long-standing member of our community; an award-winning and engaging teacher; a prolific author of original scholarship; and a distinguished member of the legal profession and community. This year's Roy L. Brooks Distinguished Lecture Series will feature Professor Brooks himself, as he prepares to retire after 47 years of teaching. The Library of Congress recognizes Professor Brooks as a distinguished scholar both in the United States and internationally. Professor Brooks is published by prestigious presses, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cambridge, the University of California, and NYU. His books span various genres, including monographs, casebooks, textbooks, and even an anthology. Twenty of his books are held by 4,457 libraries, academic institutions, and learned societies worldwide. Join us for Professor Brooks' talk, titled "Living Memoir: Roy L. Brooks," in which he will discuss his life and legacy of scholarship. Professor Brooks will highlight several prominent themes within his literary works that have significantly influenced analyses of social justice, legal theory, and democratic theory. He will share how his innovative perspectives are deeply rooted in his personal life experiences, including the racially diverse middle-class neighborhood in which he was raised not far from Yale University. He will discuss his interdisciplinary studies in law, philosophy, history, sociology, political science, and anthropology; and his classmates at Yale Law School. Creative Storytime with Ms. Katia Athenaeum Music & Arts Library 1008 Wall Street, La Jolla, CA 92037 Wednesday, November 5, 2025 10:30 a.m. The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library is thrilled to announce its newest offering for young families: Creative Storytime with Ms. Katia. This new program, held on the first Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m., is designed to introduce children to the magic of storytelling while fostering an early love for music, art, and literature. Geared for ages 2–5, Creative Storytime is a free, interactive experience featuring songs and stories that celebrate creativity and imagination. After the program, families are invited to stay and explore the Athenaeum’s extraordinary children’s collection, a treasure trove of books on music and art. This collection highlights the library’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of readers and creators. About Ms. Katia Creative Storytime will be led by Katia Graham, a passionate librarian, storyteller, and advocate for literacy. Based in San Diego, Graham brings a wealth of experience and creativity to the Athenaeum. She is a member of the Freedom to Read Statement Taskforce for the Office for Intellectual Freedom of the American Library Association and has served as Youth Services Librarian at La Jolla/Riford Public Library and Children’s Librarian at Coronado Public Library. Graham is the founder of Librarian on the Go, an initiative dedicated to promoting literacy and information access. She has a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Southern California, a second master’s in broadcast journalism from Columbia University, and a bachelor’s degree in English from Barnard College. A former reporter, Graham honed her storytelling skills in newsrooms, including KYMA, NY1 News, and ABC World News Tonight. In addition to her other programs, she proudly leads a bilingual storytime and developed San Diego Public Library's initiative to combat the Spanish disinformation crisis.
