Consider how the body is present through its absence in art by creating a papier mâché mask. We will draw inspiration from Eleanor Antin’s "100 Boots" (1971-1973), the poignant photographic novel with an intriguing journey; David Hammons "Champ" (1989), which highlights the precariousness of success; and My Barbarian’s "Universal Declaration of Infantile Anxiety Situations Reflected in the Creative Impulse" (2013), which incorporates handmade masks, props, and costumes into live performances and video performances. "Reflections" is an art-making workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older. Session 3: November 10 & November 17 In this workshop series participants will explore how ideas about the body integrate into contemporary art. Through close looking, we will engage with artworks where the body is present, and where its notable absence invokes the body. Each workshop will include an investigation of contemporary art-making techniques and materials. No prior art experience is required. Transportation will be provided, if required. Participants may join one session (two days) or more!

Based out of sunny San Diego, Gypsy Sally is a three piece blues rock band that brings the old school feel to the new age from blues, to rock with the occasional Bossa and Latin twist. Front man Kyler Jakubowski has utilized his North Carolina roots and over the years has created a very unique blues sound not heard since the 50’s, Austin Wagner links the rhythm and melody with his smooth motown influenced James Jameson style, and Martin Quezada holds the beat on drums with his Caribbean swing, all of which when brought together creates what is now known as the one and only Gypsy Sally. To date, Gypsy Sally has recorded one album, "How Long," recorded live in the studio with Alan Sanderson. Gypsy Sally is named after a bar in the song "Tecumseh Valley" by Townes Van Zandt. Apart from Van Zandt, the band is influenced by classic blues artists like B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, and Peter Green. However, in addition to the blues, the band also draws influence from the vocals of Sam Cooke, and the rock guitar of Rory Gallagher. Cobby’s firm grasp of harmony, playful melody writing, and charming voice has created new fresh new environment for jazz to shine once again. While mainly focused on Jazz in the Swing Idiom, Cobby’s is equally versed in a wide variety of musical genres ranging from Indie-Acoustic, R&B, Pop, etc.. Described as a vintage girl in a modern world, Cobby’s music possesses a natural gift for sensitive, relatable storytelling and is a blend of influences from Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Helen Forrest, The Andrew Sisters and others, twisted with modern influences like Jason Mraz, Cyrille Aimee, and Post Modern Jukebox. Zo is 34 years old and has been a performing guitarist for 12 years. He has been teaching people how to play and understand the guitar/piano for four years. Born in London, he was raised in North County, San Diego, where he currently resides. He is a graduate of CSULB with a degree in Jazz Guitar Performance, and during his time there he studied Blues, Pop, Rock, Soul, Funk, Classical, and Irish Folk Music. While at CSULB he joined an Irish Folk Band, and started his own Blues band along with vocalist Christina Wilson. He’s studied under many influential guitarists across the country. In Los Angeles, Ron Eschete and Mike Higgins. In New York, Peter Mazza, Gilad Hekselman, and Michael Valeanu. Finally, in San Diego he studied with Bob Boss, Lorraine Castellanos, Fred Kunze. These experiences have prepared him for large ensembles, quintets, quartets, trios, duos, and solo guitar performances in a variety of styles. "Tethered" is a free, multimedia dance performance curated by Lexii Regina and Micah Parra. Come enjoy a showing of current works exploring the possibilities of dance with bungee cord. Showing will feature dance film, new choreographed works, live music, and improvisation . Following the performance, there will be an opportunity to speak with the artists and performers. Performances will be held on June 7th, 2024 at 7 pm and 8 pm. This event is made possible by funding from the NTC Foundation.
