Amahl returns to Ontario! "Shepherds, Arise!" (People of Greater Ontario and the Inland Empire – come and see!) Amahl and the Night Visitors will be performed Bethel Congregational Church. Opera "newbies" and aficionados alike will rejoice in the chance to experience this joint production of Gian Carlo Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors, presented by the Southland Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of Ontario. Amahl is a family-friendly opera and has been enduringly popular since its premier in 1951. Commissioned by NBC as the first opera written for television, Amahl and the Night Visitors debuted on December 24, 1951 becoming the first network television Christmas special to become an annual tradition. Composer Gian Carlo Menotti drew inspiration for the opera from Hieronymus Bosch's The Adoration of the Magi, which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and from his childhood in Italy where gifts were brought at Christmas by the Three Kings instead of Santa Claus. Featuring outstanding principal vocalists in collaboration with the Southland Symphony Orchestra, this live, in-person performance will showcase some of the finest singers in Southern California. Their great vocal skill and dramatic ability and deeply immerse the audience in the action of the story. "We are thrilled with this production of Amahl and are so very proud of our outstanding principal singers, chorus, and orchestra", says Dr. Sylvia Lee Mann, who is the Music Director & Conductor of the Southland Symphony, and the Pastor of Bethel Congregational Church. Amahl and the Night Visitors tells the story of Amahl, a shepherd boy who has a propensity to tell tall tales, and his mother. Amahl's most recent story is about a star with a tail that moves across the sky like a chariot on fire. It is a magical, holiday tale of the journey of the Magi. When three splendid strangers knock on the door and ask to rest in their tiny home, Amahl is thrilled and fascinated. When the visitors describe the miraculous child they are seeking, both Amahl and his mother are moved to give reverence to the child as well. Their humble faith conjures a miracle. Through love and forgiveness, the charming story kindles the spirit of the holiday season. This is an inspiring and family-friendly production that is sure to touch the hearts of all ages. Join us on October 28 from 7-9:30 p.m. for our next Open Studios. With Halloween on the horizon, guests are encouraged to let their freak flag fly! Ariana Warren and Chris Warren’s musical performance will also be inspired by eerie, otherworldly elements. In honor of Dia de los Muertos, longtime resident artist Felix Diaz is leading our efforts to include some Day of the Dead celebrations and practices, too. * The Diaz Trio will perform a series of SONES, a traditional musical form originating from various regions in Mexico and used for events like Dia de los Muertos. During this lively, rhythmic, and danceable music, the audience is invited and encouraged to participate, thus creating a celebratory atmosphere. * We’ll also have an ofrenda (altar) to honor both loved ones we’ve lost from our own S4A community and pioneering Mexican surrealist women artists. * Tamales, Pan de Muerto (sweet bread), and Café de Olla (spiced coffee) will be available for purchase, along with our usual fare of snacks and beverages. Write Out Loud is thrilled to share the launch event to kick off the National Endowment for the Arts BIG READ in San Diego for 2023/24! Through this program, San Diego will Read and Celebrate the novel "CIRCE" by Madeleine Miller. The FREE launch event will take place at the San Diego Public Library in the Neil Morgan Auditorium on October 17th at 6:00 pm. Attendees will enjoy readings of excerpts from "CIRCE", a satirical performance of "Pyramus and Thisbe", the announcement of a “myth” writing contest and free books for the first 20 registered attendees. Focusing on the novel "CIRCE" by Madeleine Miller, this program will impact 4,500+ San Diegans. An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the power of a shared reading experience. NEA Big Read activities with San Diego students have begun and community wide events will take place through the month of April 2024, including a student awards presentation of THE NEA BIG READ - Read Imagine Create. This awards presentation will feature student projects inspired by CIRCE by Madeleine Miller and Edith Hamilton’s MYTHOLOGY - the middle school selection. There is still time to participate. Additional NEA Big Read activities taking place across San Diego in April 2024 include book discussions, a writing contest, presentations of Myths and Legends, visual art displays and discussions about the power of women. Mind Reader premiered at last year’s Orlando Fringe Festival. After the first performance the Orlando Weekly wrote that it was “consistently astounding” and “a thrilling hour of mystifying mentalism.” The show continued to develop over the course of a seven festival tour, going on to win the “Best Solo Show” award at this year’s Tucson Fringe Festival. If the thought of being part of the show sounds like an intimidating proposition, would-be audience members should know they have nothing to fear. While some interactive and comedic shows invite audience members on stage and make them look foolish, Mind Reader does the complete opposite. One of the defining features of Steven’s work is making the audience the stars of the show and sometimes helping them to discover abilities they never would have imagined they might possess. Every audience member participates in at least some capacity, and those who take a more prominent role are guaranteed to have an unforgettable experience. As the show name would suggest, Steven will read the minds of many audience members in unexpected and surprising ways. Mind Reader will also feature demonstrations of lighting fast mnemonics, a brief but shocking hallucination, and a finale that defies any rational explanation.
