  • Local artist Evan Apodaca is accusing the San Diego International Airport of censorship. The airport often features San Diego art, but it has removed Apodaca’s “Monumental Interventions” from its walls. The piece criticizes the military presence in the region. Speaking of art, protesters created street artwork in front of Sempra headquarters to protest fossil fuels. And some Comic-Con attendees weren’t disappointed with the lack of Hollywood at the convention. Many production companies scaled back their presence due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes.
  • Join us on October 28 from 7-9:30 p.m. for our next Open Studios. With Halloween on the horizon, guests are encouraged to let their freak flag fly! Ariana Warren and Chris Warren’s musical performance will also be inspired by eerie, otherworldly elements. In honor of Dia de los Muertos, longtime resident artist Felix Diaz is leading our efforts to include some Day of the Dead celebrations and practices, too. * The Diaz Trio will perform a series of SONES, a traditional musical form originating from various regions in Mexico and used for events like Dia de los Muertos. During this lively, rhythmic, and danceable music, the audience is invited and encouraged to participate, thus creating a celebratory atmosphere. * We’ll also have an ofrenda (altar) to honor both loved ones we’ve lost from our own S4A community and pioneering Mexican surrealist women artists. * Tamales, Pan de Muerto (sweet bread), and Café de Olla (spiced coffee) will be available for purchase, along with our usual fare of snacks and beverages. The performance schedule is: 7:15-7:45 p.m. Jonathan Piper 8:00-8:40 p.m. Diaz Trio 8:45-9:15 p.m. Ariana Warren, Chris Warren & friends Don’t forget to check S4A's website closer to the actual event date for tweaks to the performance schedule. As always, most of our artist studios will be open for guests to wander through. This is always a casual event, in which questions and discussions with different artists are encouraged, if you are so moved. Some artists also have work for sale, so don’t be afraid to ask if something sparks your interest! Space 4 Art on Facebook / Instagram
