  • From the KPBS weekend arts preview: Deena Altman: "Female Rising" opens at OMA, and is a continuation of a series shown last year at Art on 30th in North Park. In a set of eight pieces, Altman considers eight stages in a woman's life, starting in toddlerhood and stretching to elderly adulthood. Her style is considered "surreal realism," basically a mixture of realistic elements (in this case, the subject — the woman) alongside surreal or conceptual elements (here, backdrops and actions). A great example: "The Lioness at Nine (Endangered)." Details: On view Sept. 23, 2023 through Feb. 4, 2024. Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Friday. Oceanside Museum of Art, 704 Pier View Way, Oceanside. $0-$10. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the museum: There is an understanding in our culture that is subtle and mostly unspoken, that women succumb to a certain second-class life. Even though there is more consciousness now of this issue it still resonates deeply, and we are all marked by it, both women and men. However, it is the females among us that suffer most from the downside of this cultural blindness that binds our growth and development. This 8-part series depicts the life of women from toddler to elder. Each age focuses on the challenges to women at certain points in their development giving us a sense of what is experienced and how these challenges both impair and energize their paths. About the artist: Deena Altman spent many years as the VP of Marketing for her national horticultural company, Altman Plants. She guided the marketing and graphic development of many plant products including a nationwide plant brand for Home Depot. She is now a full-time artist following her passion to paint. In the 12 years that she has been painting she has achieved signature status at the Watercolor USA Honor Society, the highly regarded San Diego Watercolor Society, and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. Her paintings have been juried into numerous museums and international exhibitions including the prestigious American Watercolor Society International Exhibition in New York, the MEAM Museum in Barcelona, The Springfield Art Museum, and the International Signature American Watermedia Exhibition in Fallbrook in which only signature members are invited to submit their work to be juried. Call (858) 578-8800 for reservations Mercedes Moore will be joined by; Steve Wilcox - Guitar David Carano - Bass Danny Campbell - Drums *Photo credits to John Hancock Photography About Mercedes Moore ” From the moment Mercedes Moore takes the stage you can’t look away. She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, “I didn’t think that I could sing.” She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now. Today, fronting her own band, Mercedes works hard to be more than a voice. She wants fans to feel the music, the way she feels the music. Watching faces in the crowd on this night, as Mercedes swings through an extensive playlist of ballads, blues, and soul shakers, it’s obvious she has them right where she wants them. Yet, the most remarkable aspect of this story, the woman has only been singing professionally for a little more than eight years. Eight years. Let there be no doubt, Mercedes Moore is making the most of her time. As a three-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Moore performs regularly with some of Southern California’s premier musicians. The list is endless–Taryn Donath, John Simons, Mark Campbell, Marc Ramos, Tracy Wiebeck, Kurt Kalker, Matt Taylor, Steve Wilcox, Scot Smart, Missy Andersen, Sharifah Muhammad, and Laura Chavez–to name but a few. When asked, Moore is straightforward about the multitude of players. “It just makes you a better singer.” She smiles. “And different people have different strengths. Plus, I want to learn, so I can be better.” It appears to be working. Mercedes Moore is currently juggling four major projects and her music can range from blues, gospel, and R&B and swing. This does not take into consideration the assortment of duo and trio sets, the occasional jazz venture, and an array of impromptu performances with local and visiting artists. “ About Golden Island Golden Island Dim Sum & Asian Cuisine is a 365 seat restaurant and music venue that serves fresh, hand-made, authentic Dim Sum all day every day, with a great selection of authentic asian cuisine to choose from. Call (858) 578-8800 for reservations! Reservations are highly encouraged! About Anthony Cullins Anthony Cullins aka "The Fallbrook Kid," a young musical prodigy whose guitar playing ability is years beyond his age. Anthony's musical influences include R&B, funk, soul, rock, jazz, and blues prominently displayed in his eclectic improvisational style he calls "psychedelic soul music", ranging from Eddie Hazel and Jeff Beck to George Benson and Eric Johnson with dozens of influences in between. Anthony recently turned 21 years of age and is currently working on two studio albums, a live record, and beginning to hit the road! "Anthony has guitar skills reminiscent of young guitarists Joe Bonamassa and Jonny Lang." (Boogie Magazine) "Hearing and seeing Anthony perform alongside veteran musicians made it easy to forget that he is so young. If you haven't heard him play yet, find him!" - Annette Higby, Echo and Buzz " ... he further dazzled my senses with the playing maturity of someone way beyond his years, demonstrating a total command of the fretboard with fierce string bends, wicked vibrato, and a lick vocabulary akin to a guitarist that's been at it for decades." - Wayne Riker, San Diego Troubadour "A special young man. I'd seen him working a few times as a sideman with other artists, but recently I saw a video of him doing his own thing and I was blown away! • About the exhibition: UNDER THE INFLUENCE: Artists Pay Tribute to a Great Artist, Teacher and Friend The greatest teachers give us lessons that we unpack over a lifetime. Long after our time in classrooms become fond memories, their words of wisdom, generosity of spirit, and brilliant examples speak to us across time and distance. Under the Influence is our collective tribute to Walter Cotten whose exemplary teachings transcend any specific medium or discipline. For his former students who put his teachings into our respective art practices, Walter remains one of the defining voices whose influence is still being felt by those who were lucky to call him a dear friend. As a professor, he was a one-of-a-kind mentor and an enduring North Star for all of us who sought sanctuary and purpose creating art at San Diego State University. With his trusty canine companion, Ruby by his side, Walter pointed to the truth of always infusing one’s art with content. Walter preached the gospel of having something relevant to say regardless of the medium, and he shared the discoveries of his own life’s journey with a knowing smile behind a camera’s viewfinder. Walt’s resilient and creative spirit is alive in every former student who became a lifelong artist and friend. We form a circle of kindred spirits drawing creative sustenance from the same well. We are his brothers and sisters who answered the call to adventure of being an artist in our perilous times. These artworks exist in part because Walter Cotten provided the much-needed mentorship to light the way ahead. With his rigorous, honest and candid guidance, we learned to take an ongoing leap of faith by believing in ourselves and our individual talents as artists. What a mighty and beautiful gift indeed! Thank you, Walter. We love you, now and always. -- Neil Kendricks How to view: City Gallery, San Diego City College Oct. 21 - Dec 8, 2023 Opening Reception: 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21 Gallery Hours: 12-4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday And by appointment Artists: Jim CavoltBarbara HolmesAnna O'CainLael CorbinTerri HughesClare PutneyJohn DillemuthRichard KeelyDina RubiolioSteven DepintoNeil KendricksJason SherryJosh EggletonBessma KhalafJames SkalmanXuxhi NaungayanClayton LewallenDaniel Weiner David HewittMatt MorrisClay West Related links: City Gallery website | Instagram | Facebook
