  • Swan Lake, the ballet of all ballets, will be performed with a LIVE orchestra as a part of the World Ballet Series. See the iconic Dance of the Little Swans, count the 32 fouettés performed by Odile and immerse yourself in magical Tchaikovsky's music. The production will feature richly detailed, hand-painted sets as well as over 150 radiant costumes that bring fresh representation to this timeless classic. World Ballet Series is a unique project that attracts many international artists and is composed of renowned professional dancers representing over ten countries who are united by a passion for entertaining audiences and enriching classical ballet traditions through brilliant, critically acclaimed new productions of timeless ballet classics.   • Culturally and historically, AAPI writers have been silenced, whether from collectivism to governmental exclusion and incarceration. No more. Making Space, Taking Space is a public reading of work from San Diego Writers, Ink’s AAPI Writing Workshop, facilitated by playwright Thelma Virata de Castro. The reading, featuring multiple genres and perspectives, will take place at the Point Loma/Hervey Library on May 26, 2024, in commemoration of AAPI Heritage month. A panel discussion with the writers and workshop facilitator regarding their processes, themes, and challenges will follow the reading. The event will serve as a gathering place for artistic, cultural, historical, and literary groups and non-profits to network with the writers and share resources for future research and writing.   • From the organizers: DISCO RIOT is excited to present Choreo & The Big Gay PICNIC on May 19, 2024. Under the direction of Producing Artist Martin Anthony Dorado, this event will include outdoor dance performance + picnic shenanigans in collaboration with The Big Gay Picnic! Between performances, the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy a good ol’ picnic. Choreographers include Melissa De la Torre, Tina Carreras, Juliette Trout, Odessa Uno, and Megan Curet, with a picnic blanket installation with Collective Memory. PICNIC (noun) A picnic is an excursion or outing with shareable foods provided by the participants and eaten in the open. Picnickers like to sit on the ground, on a rug or blanket while dining “alfresco.” Picnics can be informal or fancy, playful or elegant, simple or extravagant. Outdoor games or some other form of entertainment are common at large picnics, and lend to the carefree, pleasant, and wholesome experience. .
