2023 SDSU Grad Award Exhibit Marinta Skupin’s paintings and drawings probe our relationship with the natural environment. Among the imagery referenced in her work is that of the San Diego landscape. Skupin combines it with language and scientific data in order to examine how we know the world around us. In addition to being inspired by physical features of the natural world, Skupin’s work is informed by her reflections on the history of landscape painting and on issues such as extinction and the predicted climate apocalypse. The title of the exhibition is a quote from the following passage, written by David Benioff and spoken by Brad Pitt’s character in the 2004 film Troy: “Everything is more beautiful because we're doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again.” This is Skupin’s first solo exhibition and is the result of a partnership between Art Produce and San Diego State University, through which Art Produce makes an annual award to one student in the University’s School of Art & Design for an exhibition. Prior to returning to the studio full-time, she had a long museum career, most recently as Curator of Education at Laguna Art Museum. Her work has been exhibited at such venues as the Athenaeum in La Jolla, the Institute of Contemporary Art in San Diego, Gallery 825 in Los Angeles, and the Abercrombie Gallery at McNeese State University in Louisiana. San Diego FC (SDFC) 2024 Chrome Ball Tour presented by Trust & Will is headed to the city of Chula Vista for the fifth and largest stop of the tour on Saturday, May 4. The Chrome Ball Tour in Chula Vista will kick off with a Chula Vista first responders tournament, featuring the Chula Vista Fire Department and players from the Chula Vista Police Department. The event will also feature a 3v3 street soccer tournament, a local car show, a Lucha Libre performance with Masked Republic, a San Diego FC Colors of the Community Fashion Show featuring a musical performance by Chula Vista natives Rossi Rock and Sebby OG, and musical acts featuring South Bay native DJ Beto Perez, world-renowned cumbia band Vilma Diaz y La Sonora, and San Diego native Lil Rob. Additionally, the Chrome Ball Tour stop in Chula Vista will have a beer garden and a kids area that will include face painting, inflatables and more. The event is free to the public and will run from Noon to 10 p.m. PT. The artwork for the Chrome Ball Tour stop in Chula Vista was created by local Chula Vista artists Josue Baltezar, Chikle! And Paola ‘Panca’ Villaseñor. She most recently lent her writing and voice to Brooklyn hip-hop legend AZ’s track, "NEVER ENOUGH" featuring rapper Rick Ross. She is a proud faculty member of Centrum Foundation’s Voice Works program and a past instructor at their Acoustic Blues Seminar in Port Townsend, WA teaching voice masterclasses alongside some of the country's top blues and voice artists.
