Bach Collegium San Diego (BCSD), one of the country’s leading ensembles, is performing at the BachFest 2024 in June in Leipzig, Germany. Receiving a coveted invitation to BachFest is a very prestigious honor, and Bach Collegium San Diego is only one of five American choirs who were invited. San Diego's renowned Songwriter Sanctuary series is back on April 26 at Normal Heights United, featuring a lineup of local troubadours including Calman Hart, Missy Alcazar, and Bug Guts. Joining them as our guest host is acclaimed poet and spoken word artist Lizzie Wann. About the Musicians Calman Hart, born in Woods Cross City, Utah, began his musical journey in high school, eventually making San Diego his home. With acclaimed albums like "Red-Eyed & Blue" and "Train in the Distance," he's been a staple in the city's music scene for decades as a solo artist and alongside Jeff Berkley as part of acclaimed duo Berkley Hart. Bug Guts, (rosebud and Scott Ireland) met during San Diego's punk scene heyday. After a transformative acoustic jam session, they embarked on a musical journey, releasing over a dozen albums. With a blend of Alternative, Folk, Punk, and Americana influences, their live performances are known for their infectious and playfully provocative energy. Missy Alcazar is a professional dueling pianist known for her dynamic performances. She's the first resident female dueling pianist at Disneyland's "Showdown At The Golden Horseshoe" and has had her songs featured on TV shows like "90 Day Fiance." Active in philanthropy, Missy is working on establishing The Melba Foundation to provide free music lessons and instruments to under-resourced communities. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., Show starts at 7:00 p.m. Suggested Donation: $10 (all ages), with all proceeds directly supporting the artists. Donations are encouraged but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. San Diego Craft Collective welcomes Ashley Lohr, a special guest artist and educator from Southeast Alaska! In this workshop, students will be introduced to the art of powder enamel and learn the skills to create 1-pair of torch-fired enamel earrings. Students will be using lead-free Thompson enamel on copper metal. Enamel is a glassy compound applied to and bonded by heat (fusion) to a metal surface. We will be using a handheld butane torch as our heat source. Learn how to prep, sift enamel, clean fire scale, and fire with a handheld butane torch. * Students will have their own enameling station/ will not be sharing materials. * Choose from a variety of copper metal shapes to enamel on. * Work with 11 Thompson powder enamel colors to choose your palette. * Use stencils, sgraffito tools, and frit to create your own unique designs. * All jewelry created will be ready to wear at the end of the workshop. This workshop is for beginners and for those who’d like a refresher. All materials to create 1 pair of earrings. Masks and safety goggles will be provided. This class is appropriate for ages 16 years and older. Kelly Akashi (b. 1983, Los Angeles) is known for her materially hybrid works that are compelling both formally and conceptually. Originally trained in analog photography, the artist is drawn to fluid, impressionable materials and old-world craft techniques, such as glass blowing and casting, candle making, bronze and silicone casting, and rope making. Encompassing a selection of artworks made over the past decade, "Kelly Akashi: Formations" features a newly commissioned series in which Akashi explores the inherited impact of her family’s imprisonment in a Japanese American incarceration camp during World War II. Organized by the San José Museum of Art, "Kelly Akashi: Formations" is the first major exhibition and catalog of Akashi’s work. The exhibition will be on view from Sept. 21, 2023–Feb. 18, 2024 in San Diego, following presentations at the San José Museum of Art and the Frye Art Museum, Seattle.
