Alexander Nemerov is a renowned scholar and the Fall 2023 Knapp Chair in the Liberal Arts at USD. He is also author of more than a dozen books and exhibition catalogues on a wide variety of 19th- and 20th-century cultural topics. Nemerov has written persuasively about Frederick Remington and Diane Arbus, about 19th-century still life painting and classic Hollywood cinema, always with insight and poetic flair. Throughout his career, Nemerov’s work has been cited for its intellectual risk-taking. His latest book, "The Forest: A Fable of America in the 1830s" (Princeton University Press, 2023), is based upon the 66th A. W. Mellon Lectures, which he delivered at the National Gallery of Art in 2017. "The Forest" has been praised as exceptional by academics and popular readers alike: “Neither history nor fiction, the book offers dozens of gem-like stories of [Americans’] last real encounters” with unspoiled landscapes. Nemerov will read excerpts from his highly original book, followed by a dialogue with Derrick Cartwright, PhD, an associate professor of art history at USD, who will explore his unconventional take on forest environments and their implications both within and beyond today’s academy. Join us at the beautiful Deer Park Monastery, tucked away in the hills of Escondido, to gain composting knowledge you can pass along to others. • Minimize your carbon footprint. Keeping food and yard waste out of the landfill reduces harmful methane gas emissions. • Use food and yard “waste” to create amendments for your soil. Compost use reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. • Reduce water use and increase water retention at your garden, ranch, or farm. Compost increases your soil’s water-holding capacity and improves water retention. The Master Composter course provides training in the art and science of composting through lectures, demonstrations, and a field trip. The course covers the following topics: • Traditional composting & vermicomposting • Compost bin building and troubleshooting (in teams!) • Microbiology of composting • Bokashi fermentation • Macrodecomposers in your compost pile • A tour of Deer Park Monastery’s composting system • Environmental impacts Master Composter certification requires attendance at all 5 classes, as well as 30 volunteer hours of related community service. Based out of sunny San Diego, Gypsy Sally is a three piece blues band that brings the old school feel to the new age from blues, to rock with the occasional Bossa and Latin twist. Front man Kyler Jakubowski has utilized his North Carolina roots and over the years has created a very unique blues sound not heard since the 50’s, Austin Wagner links the rhythm and melody with his smooth motown influenced James Jameson style, and Martin Quezada holds the beat on drums with his Caribbean swing, all of which when brought together creates what is now known as the one and only Gypsy Sally. To date, Gypsy Sally has recorded one album, "How Long," recorded live in the studio with Alan Sanderson. Gypsy Sally is named after a bar in the song "Tecumseh Valley" by Townes Van Zandt. Apart from Van Zandt, the band is influenced by classic blues artists like B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, and Peter Green.
