4 Thursdays each month from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Ages 6-12 welcome! This month-long series is full of hands-on, engaging crafts using STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics). These hands-on activities will allow your child to express themselves in a creative way while practicing and building fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination and much more. This series is a wonderful introduction to a creative and nurturing learning environment. Projects encourage problem-solving in creative and innovative ways, and include wood, textiles, clay, paper, and glass arts. Students will make fun, beautiful pieces to take home over the course of the series. Students explore a variety of mediums to teach hand skills to children using safe, natural materials. Each project teaches craftsmanship, dexterity and material exploration. Projects range from woodworking, sewing, ceramics, paper crafts, textiles to fusing glass. Young students will make beautiful pieces to take home over the course of the series. All materials included. To reflect on border impacts worldwide and honor lives lost to border policies, the Museum of Us will be offering a series of free “Hostile Terrain 94” Toe Tag Completion workshops on select dates in October. Advance registration is required. Participants can join as individuals or in small groups. Maximum capacity per workshop is 35 participants. "Hostile Terrain 94" is a participatory map installation created by the Undocumented Migration Project, a non-profit research and arts-education collective. In collaboration with the Museum of Us, "Hostile Terrain 94" was further developed into a broader exhibit that illustrates the impacts of dehumanizing border policies on human life. The "Hostile Terrain 94" exhibit features a participatory map of the lives lost crossing the Sonoran Desert region of the US-Mexico border. Each person is represented by a toe tag, placed on the location where their body was found. During the workshop, participants will write toe tags that will later be installed on the wall map. Time for discussion, reflection, and a brief tour of the exhibit will conclude the workshop. Please note that the inclusion and length of the closing tour may vary by group. This workshop directly connects with loss of life and violent realities of migration along U.S. border regions. The experience and content can be very powerful and personal. Please use your discretion to decide if this is an appropriate fit for your group. There are no graphic images, but content does include references to death and violence.

"Art of West" highlights paintings and sculpture held in private collections by San Diego County based art collectors. Live sculpting takes place during the exhibition with artist Mehl Lawson, a member of the Cowboy Artists of America. "Art of the West" exhibitions and auction opens Sat. July 8 with a gala reception, Western barbeque and auction at the Bonita Museum & Cultural Center located in San Diego, California. The exhibition, which runs from July 8 through August 2023, is curated by local Western art collectors such as Mehl Lawson, Mark Fehlman and features artworks from San Diego County collectors. Artists in the exhibition include Roy Anderson, Joe Bohler, Tom Browning, Marcia Burtt, Bruce Green, Ralph Love, Harry Jackson, Calvin Liang, Michael Malm, John Moyers, Terry Moyers, Bill Owen, Bob Pummill, Jim Reynolds, Jason Rich, Ray Roberts,Bob “Shoofly” Shufelt, Eric Sloan and Olaf Weighorst. Live and silent auctions will feature art works by local artists and sculpture by Mehl Lawson. Bonita is home to Cowboy Artist of America and Traditional Cowboy Arts Association member Mehl Lawson who leads a paint-out in the Sweetwater Valley every May as well as passing on sculpture traditions to the next generation of artists. The Athenaeum is pleased to welcome local artist Kim MacConnel for a special presentation of his career, process, recent projects, and 2010 mural "The Girl from Ipanema" for Murals of La Jolla. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 6:30 p.m. lecture. As a seminal figure in the Pattern and Decoration movement of the 1970s, MacConnel created a unique visual language, drawing inspiration from wide-ranging and multicultural sources such as textile arts, found graphic images, and Henri Matisse.
