The guys from the Zzymzzy Quartet have simple ambitions. They just want to play it like it was when it was unamplified, melodic, swinging, dreamy, full of sly surprise. From the Prohibition through the Second Big War, the glory days of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are being recaptured humbly and with humor in San Diego by four musicians who know it don’t mean a thing without that swing. They are Beston Barnett on guitar and vocals, Matt Gill on clarinet, Paul Homick on upright bass, and Pete Miesner on guitar and lead vocals. The Zzymzzy Quartet takes its name from a hypothetical “last word” in the dictionary. Thus, their tagline is “The Last Word in Gypsy Swing.” The “Gypsy” sound is heard in much of the guitar work, heavily influenced by the stylings of French Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt, but the group also pays tribute to the Swing Era with classic standards and idiomatic originals. Since the Zzymzzy Quartet came together in 2004, they have played dances, parties, weddings, festivals, art openings, and events throughout Southern California to unanimous enthusiasm, carving out a name for themselves as a tasty dance band and a classy addition to every wedding. In 2017, ARTS HURTS Records released their second CD, Petite Fleur which, on top of inspired playing and elegant arrangements, features cameos from a variety of beloved San Diego musicians. For this special sound-art event at INTERVALS in Little Italy, QUADRA will present a quadraphonic sound and light installation with live performances throughout the evening. Led by longtime San Diego-based musician and artist Jason Soares (Physics, Rice), the QUADRA group will feature Rick Froberg (Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes), Mike Egington (Earthless) and Arturo Ulloa (Physics) playing multiple sets of long-form improvised music using modular synthesis and traditional instrumentation. QUADRA has become one of the leading members of San Diego’s burgeoning modular synth and experimental electronic music community. By combining the elements of analog electronics with the dreamy, drone-based song forms of post-punk and krautrock, QUADRA takes inspiration from 70’s ‘motorik’ groups like Can, Faust, and Cluster. Informed by 20th century avant garde composers such as La Monte Young and Pauline Oliveros, QUADRA moves beyond rock band territory by creating site-specific sound installations that use long duration sine waves and modulated light. The evening will also feature a modular synth pop-up display by BOUTIQUE PEDAL NYC and a separate ‘Tape and Radio’ installation by instrument maker John Kennedy of Pulp Logic. The unique objects displayed at the niche of Mingei International Museum reflect the creative expressions of seven international female artists selected by Persian Place, from Feb. 1, 2024 to May 31, 2024. Seven international female artists were invited to create work inspired by the Shahnameh, a 10th and 11th-century epic poem by Persian poet Abul Qasem Ferdowsi. The Shahnameh narrates the heroic tales of Persian kings and also acknowledges the pivotal role of Iranian women as influential nurturers and warriors in their communities. The showcased artists include Shirin Aghdaie, Sasha Furlan, Melissa Meier, Yasaman Mostajeran, Marty Ornish, Sara Soleimani Qashqai, and Soroor Sharifi.
