Iván Naranjo a fundamental asymmetry The Center for Experimentation and Production of Contemporary Music (Cepromusic), the leading new music ensemble in Mexico, will make binational musical history this month by offering two concerts at the prestigious Conrad Prebys Concert Hall at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). The performances, scheduled for January 30 and 31 at 7 p.m., will mark a milestone for Cepromusic, as they kick off their first international tour since the COVID 19 pandemic. Both concerts will be free and open to the public. Under the baton of their visionary artistic director José Luis Castillo, Cepromusic is proud to present "Translínea. Binational Tour 2024" – a groundbreaking series of concerts that not only celebrates the reemergence of international music making but also marks the ensemble's debut at the renowned UC San Diego venue and their first visit to the US West Coast ever. The tour also includes concerts in the neighboring Mexican cities of Tijuana and Ensenada, yet another first for the Mexico City-based ensemble. The concerts will feature a wide array of adventurous and diverse repertoire, aiming to build a musical bridge between contemporary Mexican composition and global new music. Highlights include works by German composer Karola Obermüller (her first-ever performance on campus since she was hired as a professor at UC San Diego), and by Mexican mavericks Ignacio Baca Lobera and Iván Naranjo. More importantly, Cepromusic will perform compositions by several of the talented graduate students of UC San Diego’s Department of Music – Aaron Mencher, Akari Komura, Alex Taylor, Jiyoung Ko, and Nasim Khorassani. These emerging composers contribute to the rich tapestry of new music, offering a glimpse into the future. The concerts will also feature works by globally acclaimed composers Rebecca Saunders and Liao Lin-Ni, embodying a collaborative spirit that transcends borders. Taught by a variety of skilled educators and professional artists, your child will explore seasonal crafts through a variety of mediums such as woodworking, ceramics, textiles, glass and more. Along the way, we’ll make fun, high-quality crafts kids can take home. Our projects are geared to build and hone skills such as hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, creativity, comprehension + exploration of a variety of materials. Projects and depth of craft exploration are matched up to the child’s age and ability. It’s important that your child bring water in a refillable bottle and a snack (no candy or peanut products please) in case they are hungry or thirsty during this time. In addition, if your child is enrolled in a nearby camp elsewhere in Liberty Station, and they’re camp is ending as ours begins, we are happy to walk your child from their camp to the studio. And, a preview of an exhibit by the De La Torre Brothers currently on view at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Plus, hip-hop artist and comedian Reggie Watts is coming to The Music Box on Saturday.

Reception and meet artist Francisco Eme whose exhibition "The Resistance of Echo & La Eco-Resistencia" is on view. During the pandemic, artist Francisco turned his attention to the canyon behind his house. He removed the invasive plants and nurtured the growth of indigenous species; he observed the flora and the fauna, listened to the call of coyotes, birds, and recorded their comings and goings. The work in this exhibit is inspired by this act of eco-resistance. Francisco has taken hundreds of photographs, videos and audio recordings of the canyon. He has collected objects, organic and manmade, and created others. These documents and artifacts, are the foundational materials for the artworks in the exhibition. "The Resistance of Echo & La Eco-Resistencia" turned into a contemplative multimedia art project, an urban ecology study focusing on the biological dynamics of a canyon situated in a suburb of San Diego. This project connects us with the activity in the canyon as it resists “guerrilla style” against the monstrosity of urbanization, against human intervention.
