From the gallery: Wendell Kling transforms the Athenaeum's gallery and windows with light, color, and cut paper silhouetted imagery to create a peaceful, contemplative retreat. Taking inspiration from temples of various belief systems, A Coruscating Sanctuary provides a platform for the activities that take place within. Kineto-luminescent furnishings and lights orient participants to the central “altar” and matching lectern. Here, the sanctuary invites visitors to participate in quiet reflection, readings, and occasional activations in the exchange of philosophies through poetry, sound, movement, and performance. Wendell M. Kling is a Southern California based interdisciplinary artist and educator. Kling's work is grounded in contemporary interdisciplinary practice that often incorporates sculptural objects with two-dimensional media, installation, performance, and film. The artist received a BA and MFA in studio art from UCSD in 1989 and 2000 respectively and has exhibited locally and nationally at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, Ship in the Woods, Bread & Salt, Art Basel Miami (2005), Thrust Projects in New York, and MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles. Kling is currently professor of sculpture and new genres at San Diego Mesa College. Chinese culture features a rich and eclectic wealth of stories. From legends and fairy tales to narratives steeped in history. From dragons (for this is the Year of the Dragon) to stories of love and luck to fish and fishing traditions that brought many to San Diego. January 27th, storytellers Jim Dieckmann, Aunt Li-Anne, and Mindy Donner will share tales at the museum to bring in the "Year of the Dragon." Join professional storytellers from the Storytellers of San Diego for an hour of engaging tales. Each program features different tellers and different stories. Come to one, two, or all three. Other Shows February 17th, "Love, Luck and Good Fortune" tales will be told by Fred Laskowski, David Schmidt, and Patti Christensen. March 3rd, " Tales of Fish and Fish" will be told by Marilyn McPhie, Lissette Ryan and Emily Stamets. Appropriate for all ages. Marisa DeLuca (She/Her) is a post-contemporary artist working in painting, drawing, and photography. Her practice examines intersections between time, memory, impermanence, and critical theory. She received her BA in Visual Arts (Studio) from UCSD in 2021 and is currently pursuing her MFA at San Diego State University's School of Art + Design. Sourcing original photographs from the Oceanside Historical Society's archives and incorporating materials from dismantled antique homes Marisa will continue to investigate the origins of cycles of disappearance and remnant from a new angle - anchored in the city she loves. Marisa continues her creative research into memory and forgetting, permanence and catastrophic change in this limited series, transubstantiating the charred remains of the home located at 610 Minnesota Avenue into reliquary paintings.
