From the moment Mercedes Moore takes the stage you can’t look away. She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, "I didn’t think that I could sing." She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now. Today, fronting her own band, Mercedes works hard to be more than a voice. She wants fans to feel the music, the way she feels the music. Watching faces in the crowd on this night, as Mercedes swings through an extensive playlist of ballads, blues, and soul shakers, it’s obvious she has them right where she wants them. Yet, the most remarkable aspect of this story, the woman has only been singing professionally for a little more than eight years. Eight years. Let there be no doubt, Mercedes Moore is making the most of her time. As a three-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Moore performs regularly with some of Southern California’s premier musicians. About Justin & Melonie Grinnell MELONIE GRINNELL is an active as an educator and performer. She began studying piano at an early age and has since been recognized for her skills as a pianist, and her abilities as a vocalist, music educator, and musical director. Melonie received her Bachelors of Music degree in Music Education with jazz emphasis from the University of Miami and a Masters of Music performance degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University. Additionally, she is on the faculty for the Francis Parker/KSDS 88.3 Summer Jazz Workshop where she teaches jazz piano and co-directs middle school to high school student ensembles. She is also active as an adjudicator for instrumental jazz festivals including the Coronado/COSA Jazz Festival and the KSDS Jazz 88/CMEA festival. JUSTIN GRINNELL is a San Diego-based freelance jazz bassist and music educator. More importantly, he is a husband to pianist/educator Melonie Grinnell and father to their two sons. In addition to performing, Justin maintains an active teaching schedule as adjunct faculty at University of San Diego and Grossmont College, and as faculty for the Francis Parker Annual Summer Jazz Workshop. He has also served as an adjudicator and clinician at local music festivals, such as the Coronado Jazz Festival and the San Diego Bass Fest. Justin received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Jazz Performance from San Diego State University while studying with bassists Gunnar Biggs and Bert Turetzky. Justin also achieved ABD (all but dissertation) status for a doctoral degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California. Besides studying privately with Los Angeles' first-call jazz bassist, Darek Oles, Justin's enrollment at USC gave him the opportunity to study with internationally-recognized jazz artists Peter Erskine, Russ Ferrante, Bob Mintzer, and Alan Pasqua. Art Scene West and Matt Drey Arts are co-producing an art exhibition of recent works by two well respected, veteran SoCal landscape artists, Darrel McPherson and John Cornfield. McPherson began painting in 1970, moving from abstract in his early work at Indiana University to his career commitment to landscape impressionism, influenced by Pissarro, McPherson paints exclusively in oils and has painted continuously up to the present. McPherson estimates a career total of 1500+ paintings and he has followers all over San Diego County and throughout California. John Cornfield has been drawing and painting for over 20 years, including with many of the top plein air artists in the country. Inspired by an older generation of Southwest and California Impressionists, Cornfield's landscapes follow in their unique use of color and form. Cornfield’s paintings are found in private and public collections throughout southern California. A graduate of UCSD, Cornfield has many local San Diego followers. Many of his collectors say that his paintings evoke a sense of “vintage California”. Cornfield paints exclusively in acrylics. The 2023 Blue Water Film Festival (BWFF) takes place June 8 - 11, 2023 at various locations throughout San Diego County, in celebration of United Nations World Oceans Day. The event will feature a total of 34 films; 11 feature films, 19 shorts, and 4 animated short films. Opening night will be held June 8 at MOPA in Balboa Park screening "THE WATER WALKER" with Oceanside-born Producer Stevie Salas in attendance and "WHO ARE THE MARCUSES?" with Director Matthew Mishory in attendance. ABOUT THE FILMS: "THE WATER WALKER" is a documentary-animation hybrid that illustrates the journey of an Indigenous youth climate activist, Autumn Peltier. Narrated by Indigenous Hollywood icon Graham Greene, "THE WATER WALKER" is a stunning documentary-animation hybrid tracing the roots, passion and perseverance of leading Indigenous youth climate activist, Autumn Peltier. Zo is 34 years old and has been a performing guitarist for 12 years. He has been teaching people how to play and understand the guitar/piano for four years. Born in London, he was raised in North County, San Diego, where he currently resides. He is a graduate of CSULB with a degree in Jazz Guitar Performance, and during his time there he studied Blues, Pop, Rock, Soul, Funk, Classical, and Irish Folk Music. While at CSULB he joined an Irish Folk Band, and started his own Blues band along with vocalist Christina Wilson. He’s studied under many influential guitarists across the country. In Los Angeles, Ron Eschete and Mike Higgins. In New York, Peter Mazza, Gilad Hekselman, and Michael Valeanu. Finally, in San Diego he studied with Bob Boss, Lorraine Castellanos, Fred Kunze. These experiences have prepared him for large ensembles, quintets, quartets, trios, duos, and solo guitar performances in a variety of styles.
