When does text become art? How does the use of words in artwork impact the whole? Join us on Friday, June 16 for a discussion on Celia Álvarez Muñoz’s "Home Economics" (1997) and Ed Ruscha’s "Ace" (1962). Then, using a found poetry activity to help spark ideas, incorporate text and traditional or modern calligraphy to create text-and-image-based artwork. Participants may attend this single session and create standalone artwork, or attend multiple sessions. The artwork from this session can be added to a handmade artist’s book during the final session. This workshop is part of Reflections, an eight-session workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older. Vanguard Culture presents the ENVZN23: Urban Art Takeover, a visual and performing arts festival that will transform numerous warehouses, industrial spaces, and other urban areas of the Commercial Street corridor in Logan Heights. Two full city blocks will be activated with multi-sensory art interventions by creatives from both sides of the U.S./Mexico border on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, from 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. Visitors will experience live dance, puppetry, and theatre performances on warehouse loading docks, a fashion show by Fashion Week San Diego in an industrial storage lot, art installations with curated soundscapes by Tijuana-based multimedia artist MALU, a short film festival inside a crossfit gym, delicious food and drink by local vendors, dance performances along the trolley line and much more. ENVZN23 will respond to the urban landscape by integrating curated sound and theatrical lighting design throughout. ENVZN23 is designed as a recurring event and will return during the year-long celebrations of World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 for an audience of thousands of design professionals, art patrons, and other culture-seekers from the San Diego Tijuana region and around the world. Jonesy Jones is an internationally touring entertainer who indulges in her craft to provide a phenomenal experience for the audience. Her high flying energy on stage can be felt throughout the entire performance, and her soulful rhythm and melodies are sure to lull any audience into a feel good vibe. Jonesy Jones has been involved in dance since the age of 10. Yolanda began teaching beginner Tap dance and Hip-Hop dance under Lynn Brown at Prima Dance Studios at the age of 16. She also taught modern hip-hop and Tap Dance at Midtown Dance Studios and Mobile Contemporary Dance Studios.

Truth in Comedy, or TiC for short, is a storytelling, stand-up comedy, and art show where humanity is the muse. It's a unique experience that's raw and beautiful. Three individuals will tell a very personal story from their life, aka their truth, where they will be very open, honest, and vulnerable. Afterwards, a comedian will perform a set inspired by the story. At the end of the night, an artist will present a triptych they created inspired by the stories as well.
