'Roy Jenuine: Modern Folk Art' Exhibit Opening Night Reception
Leucadia-based mixed media artist Roy Jenuine hosts an exhibit – "Roy Jenuine: Modern Folk Art" – in Solana Beach, showcasing a lifetime of work from 1978 through today. Jenuine has spent his life’s work blending wood, photography and found materials to create artful masterpieces spanning functional furniture to mixed-media assemblage. Following the opening party, which is open to the public, the gallery will be open Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jenuine’s work explores materials, finishes, and craftsmanship, as well as observations about his surroundings. He finds humor in the everyday, captures nostalgia, pushes the boundaries of function and form. He aligns himself with folk art and architecture, addressing both complex modernist aesthetics and found elements from the salvage yard. Drawing from his childhood in Los Angeles, early 1970s residency at the radical architectural project "Arcosanti", and formal training at San Diego State University, Jenuine has developed a distinctive visual vocabulary that is rigorous, fun, meditative and truly original. Coffee and Conversations with Alberto López Pulido
"The Many Worlds and Identities of Guadalupe" with Alberto López Pulido / "Los Muchos Mundos e Identidades de Guadalupe" con Alberto López Pulido Over the years, Mexicanos and Chicane/a/os have been preoccupied with questions of identity in relation to its fluid and multidimensional nature. Through the power of Chicana and Chicano Art, "The Many Worlds and Identities of Guadalupe" explores Guadalupe as an embodiment of these worlds in an attempt to better understand Chicana/o culture and identity in our contemporary world Alberto López Pulido is the founding chair of the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of San Diego, where he has taught since 2003. A native of San Diego’s South Bay, his upbringing between borders shaped his fronterizo perspective. He began his education at Southwestern College before earning degrees in Sociology and Chicano Studies from UC San Diego. He later completed graduate studies at the University of Notre Dame under the mentorship of Dr. Julian Samora. Pulido’s research explores the intersection of Chicana/o/x communities, spirituality, and cultural expression. His award-winning work on Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Logan Heights is among his important works of scholarship. A trained sociologist, he has published widely on ethnic studies, Chicano/a studies in higher education, and material culture. Mingei International Museum on Facebook / Instagram
One More Time (A Tribute To Daft Punk)
In 2010, Ben Linsenmeyer and Ron Diep were booked to play a college Halloween party. As two DJs who came of age during the French electro renaissance, they thought it would be both funny and poignant to tackle the gig in full Daft Punk regalia. So, decked out in silver android helmets and silicon suits, the Phoenix, Arizona duo took the stage with a rudimentary wooden pyramid evoking Daft Punk’s iconic 2006-2007 world tour. Eight years later, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter remain in self-imposed exile from the touring circuit, and Linsenmeyer and Diep’s Daft Punk tribute act, One More Time, is thriving. That one-off Halloween set has blossomed into a legitimate touring business in which the Arizona DJs imitate the French robots the best they can, using a setlist based on the live album "Alive 2007" and a production team that approximates the architecture of Daft Punk’s final tour to date. That dedication has powered world tours – including headlining gigs at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl and Los Angeles’ Regent Theater – and delightfully uncanny in-costume photoshoots with the real Deadmau5. Like it or not, One More Time may very well be the closest you’re going to get to an authentic Daft Punk concert experience in this lifetime. One More Time on Instagram / Facebook
