Join us every first Thursday of the month from Memorial Day to Labor Day for a monthly film screening curated by Standard Fantastic Pictures’ (SFP) Omar Lopex. The screening will include a feature film inspired by our special exhibition "Celia Álvarez Muñoz: Breaking the Binding" and local SFP shorts. Like Álvarez Muñoz, Standard Fantastic Pictures examines the nature of the border and embraces an ‘artivistst’ (art + activist) perspective in art-making. Saturday, May 6 from 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Join instructor Suzanne Balestri to learn the basics of Fused Glass and create your own glass jewelry to keep for yourself or give as a gift. Mother’s Day is coming up! This fun workshop offers a perfect introduction to kiln-formed or fused glass for beginners, and allows those who have worked with glass before to hone their abilities and finesse their skills. You will learn how fused glass differs from other forms of art glass, how to use the various tools involved in creating glass art, and how to cut and grind the glass you will be using in your wearable art project. Using a colorful array of glass and pre-fired adornments, you’ll construct abstract or representational designs to be fashioned into earrings, pendants, rings, cuff links, even belt buckles! Each student will have roughly 8” x 8” of space in the kiln – plenty of space for several items! Your pieces will be fired in a glass kiln to completely fuse each design into one solid piece, and will be ready for you to pick up the following week. Workshop fee includes pre-workshop instructional videos, all glass, equipment, and kiln firing of several pieces. Supply Fee $10 (cash only) is due to instructor at the workshop. It includes pre-fused adornments plus jewelry findings for up to 3 items (excluding leather for bracelets/belts). Additional findings, chains, cording, and leather for bracelets and belts will also be available for cash purchase. This workshop is recommended for All Skill Levels – Ages 13 and up. Opening Reception and artist talk Apr. 8 at 5:30 p.m. From the organizers: Marisa DeLuca (She/Her) is a post-contemporary artist working in painting, drawing, and photography. Her practice examines intersections between time, memory, impermanence, and critical theory. Marisa comes from a background of community engagement through nonprofit service in the arts sector. She is founder and President of the nonprofit Artists in Solidarity, an artist collective that raises funds for migrant families through charity art auctions. Marisa is a San Diego native based in Oceanside, California and received her BA in Visual Arts (Studio) from UC San Diego in 2021. She is currently pursuing her MFA at San Diego State University's School of Art + Design. This solo exhibition is a reverent meditation on the disappearing spaces in DeLuca's home, Oceanside, CA. Originally in response to increasing gentrification in the region, these paintings have developed into an investigation of personal feelings around home, impermanence, and remembrance. An urgency to preserve that which is being lost, while paying homage to the spirits of Oceanside that fade into homogeneity, is the driving force behind this work. This exhibition is the culmination of a three-year artistic project that was intended to be shown in the community it honors. As a realization of this vision, DeLuca has chosen to show the work in its entirety at the social center of the city - the library. She hopes the community will see themselves in this work and find their own personal connections.

A Conversation with Art Spiegelman, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Artist/Illustrator and Author of “Maus” When | March 29, 2023 from 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Where | Virtual Presented by the UC San Diego Library Author Talk Series in partnership with the Holocaust Living History Workshop, with support from Phyllis and Dan Epstein Audrey Geisel University Librarian Erik T. Mitchell and Herman Wouk Chair in Modern Jewish Studies and professor of history Deborah Hertz invite you to join the UC San Diego Library Author Talk Series and Holocaust Living History Workshop for a virtual discussion featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning artist, illustrator and author of “Maus”, Art Spiegelman. The discussion will be moderated by Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities Cristina Della Coletta. Registration is open and required. About the Author Art Spiegelman almost single-handedly brought comic books out of the toy closet and onto the literature shelves. In 1992, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his masterful Holocaust narrative “Maus” which portrayed Jews as mice and Nazis as cats. “Maus II” continued the remarkable story of his parents’ survival of the Nazi regime and their lives later in America. Spiegelman’s many distinguished honors include the Angoulême International Comics Festival Best Foreign Album Award, the Eisner Award, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction, the Edward MacDowell Medal, and the honorary National Book Award for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. He was made an Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France and — the American equivalent — played himself on an episode of “The Simpsons”. Named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Spiegelman continues to feature prominently in American cultural life.
